CHURCH HISTORY ROCKS! Couldn't put it down!

This book is easy to read and captivating. Shelley does a remarkable job of explaining Christianity from it's humble beginning to it's present state in a clear concise manner that isn't bogged down in details. The history is told in story form and you can almost watch it unfold. It can ocasionally get confusing because the book doesn't always correspond to a timeline. Rather, it concentrates more on the individual stories and in doing so makes the book much more enjoyable. I enjoyed the way Shelley introduced different ages in church history and presented problems that the church has faced throughout time as well as some issues that we are still coming to grips with today. The personal stories are vivid and captivating and it really does help to explain a lot of rituals and reasons behind a lot of the whys most Christians have today about the church.

Western Church and not the Church History

My main complaint is that this book is an exclusively "Western Church History" and not a "Church History" as it claims in the title. Even during the time of the Great Ecumenical councils, it focuses mainly on Rome and the Popes. Eastern Orthodoxy which contributed the most to the three first Councils (Nicaea 325, Constantinople 381, and Ephesus 431) that spelled out the main Christian doctrines of both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches gets mentioned only in two chapters and without any details. Regardless of the great role they played, the Oriental Orthodox (Syrians and Indo-Iranian) Christians only get mentioned in very few sentences and only as occasional incidents.

The Coptic Church which was established by Saint Mark himself and which remains as one of the very few Churches that - from its conception and up till today - seldom enjoyed a peaceful time without persecution and consequently was never affected by the state or political influences but held tightly to the early Christian traditions and teachings, is hardly ever mentioned. There were no comments on the many great saints of Christian Orthodoxy nor the Desert Fathers and Mothers who had a great impact on the Church's teachings.

Because of overlapping presentation of events, it is not easy to follow the actual timeline; the author often jumps back and forth in time causing some confusion. Furthermore there was no mention of the differences that separate the three main churches: Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant; Missing such an essential matter in the history of the Church is quite disappointing

If you are looking for a book about "The History of the Western Church", this is a book for you. If you are interested in knowing about the Eastern and/or Orthodox influences in the history of the church, this is not the book for you. I will look for other books to get a better perspective on the cultural vastness of Christianity. When I find one I will edit this review to mention it for you

I am a visual artist with a great appreciation for music. Over the years, I have had many questions about music, why it was done this way or that, why some people felt something wasn't music that others did, and the like. I generally listen to music while I paint and draw. I am educated in visual art making, history, and aesthetics. I wanted a book that would answer my questions and in the voices of the composers, critics, philosophers, performers, and others of the periods in question. I wanted something not too technical, something that explained the whys and why nots. I wanted a book like the Art in Theory series, but about music. This is that book!

Granted, a person's appreciation for the texts will be deeper with the ability to read music and a knowledge of how to play it. A few essays are almost entirely about sophisticated technical issues. But most of the book is accessible to the layperson or philistine. True, some issues in visual art and music overlap, but there are many differenes in thinking. So, my art education itself would not explain to me what I needed to know.

The book made me as comfortable with music as I have been in my life with visual art. Music can have an intimidation factor due to it being a language most of us cannot write. But hearing the issues that concerned the creators of music as well as philosophers who wished to discuss it made it an incredibly human and welcoming phenomenon. Yes, you can have a sense of humor about great composers, performers, and the like. Yes, some composers find other composers boring. But even the composers you can't stand work their tails off to make experiences that we can enjoy. Hey, everybody wants to be loved ;-).

This revised edition has some snappy articles by various women in it. Yay! So, it's not just a boys club. And it attempts to have a global cultural edge to it, while staying in the Western tradition. So, you get a variety of perspectives that sometimes have an outsider feel about them.

It took me two months to read this book and I don't regret a minute of it! It was a very enriching experience and has opened my eyes to musics I never imagined I'd like! :-{D}

"In logic, as in life, it is the obvious that most often bears emphasizing, because it so easily escapes our notice," McInerny argues in this pithy guide to applying logical thinking to everyday life. Modeled after Strunk and White’s indispensable handbook, The Elements of Style, McInerny’s primer offers valuable counsel on making a clear and effective point. He calls attention to the tremendous importance that language holds in the crafting and presentation of an argument, advising readers to "make your words as precise and sharply focused as possible" and to keep arguments, or at least their essential purpose, simple. Readers need not have a background in philosophy to follow McInerny’s remarkably comprehensible explanation of the methods used to construct a valid case, including the syllogistic argument, the conjunctive and disjunctive arguments and the conditional argument. The author also dedicates considerable discussion to the sources and the principal forms of illogical thinking, from such common ruses as begging the question and using tears as a diversionary tactic to the more ethically questionable ad hominem strategy, in which a person ignores an argument and attacks his opponent’s character instead. Certainly not a waste of time, but

Being Logical: A Guide to Good Thinking

One of the stated goals in author D.Q. McInerny's preface to "Being Logical" is to in "some degree succeed in doing for the cause of good thinking what 'Elements of Style' has done for that of good writing." This book does not meet that goal. It is very doubtful that I will keep it on hand as a reference to help form my thoughts or to construct arguments. There's not enough "how to" guidance for that.

Further, many of the examples that are given do not seem to have been very thoughtfully crafted. Based on that, and also on the too-informal language that pops up throughout, one might be led to suspect that McInerny cobbled together some lecture notes for this book, but didn't make the extra effort to enliven it and strengthen it. The book actually feels like it could be the appendix or the introductory chapter to a larger, better work.

Judging outside the goal of the author, the book is not awful or misleading like some reviewers have made it out to be. It was worthwhile and certainly not a waste of time, but given the opportunity to go back and choose another book for an introduction to logic, I would. And maybe if you're reading this review, you should too.

Its a book I needed for a class

As much as I love writing detailed reviews, I cant for this. The book is worded in a way that you need to reread what you just read to semi-understand it. It over complicates the simplest things, and if I had the choice, I would never read this. But I needed it for a class, so what can you do?

Should be mandatory for those entering adulthood

Every high-schooler should have to read this. Also anyone who plans to ever vote in an election would benefit. I read this and several other books for an intro to grad school assignment. It helps to reorient your brain to the different types of fallacies and flawed reasoning/arguments that persuade so many people. Its good, simple, and is more like a handbook for reference.. Its an easy read that may be too easy or rudimentary to some long-time students, but its still good.

About the Author
Daniel Simon is an internationally acclaimed designer and trailblazing virtual image creator. He worked for hyper car maker Bugatti and collaborated with Formula 1, Puma and Lotus. Simon is author of the best-selling book Cosmic Motors, a collection of spectacular science-fiction vehicles. Since 2008 Simon has worked with famed directors to create vehicles for Hollywood blockbusters such as Tron: Legacy, Captain America, Prometheus, and the upcoming Oblivion. Stunning vehicle designs from Daniel Simon again

[[VIDEOID:moZ5UKPCTQX7OB]]Daniel Simon who put out the amazing vehicle concept art book Cosmic Motors in 2007 is finally back with a new book in The Timeless Racer.

After Cosmic Motors was published, he has went on to work on films like Tron: Legacy, Prometheus, Marvel's Captain America and Oblivion.

The Timeless Racer is Daniel Simon's personal project, one that he took time off in 2011 from movie work to create. It's a cumulative of 4,500 hours of work in the book.

It's a big 12 by 14 inch hardcover book. The beautiful cover is of matte smooth surface. There are only 72 pages so you'll most likely be left wanting more after looking at the amazing visuals and work inside, and also if you compared it to the 176-page Cosmic Motors.

The book is designed like one of those luxurious picture books on race cars and legends. In this case, we are introduced to the world of futuristic racing with a time-traveling race driver Vic Cooper, and his record-breaking team Masucci.

The visuals are created with a blend of photography and 3D renders. The huge canvas of the book really shows off the detail and beauty of the cars. The gloss, decals and designs are just wonderful. There are also some schematic concept sketches. The designs of the cars are like super evolved F1 race cars but sleeker. They are not exactly sci-fi designs but feel real enough that they could be from the future.

Even the photo shoots are handled with attention to detail with custom made costumes, and even in one picture, some girl was wearing a pair of headphones, on them were printed with Masucci logo. Vic Cooper's boots are also stamped with those logos. Look at the photos carefully to spot all these little details.

Towards the back, there are also some race track layouts, and behind-the-scenes photos on how the photos were created.

It's an artbook of stunning visuals.

Note that in addition to the standard hardcover edition, there are also the limited slipcase edition and an even more limited Pitlane-club edition. Those would be available on publisher Design Studio Press website. The books come with English, French and German text. And there's a Japanese edition as well.

Amazing Book - Super High Quality Pictures, Great Story, Must Have in Your Collection

Daniel Simon does it again, this is truly a masterpiece collection of pictures from the racing world of the future. You may know Daniel's work from Tron, Oblivion etc and his latest work continues his tradition of unique and eye-catching designs. If you're a racing fan or know someone who is, definitely get this book. It will sell out. The book is huge, and the colors and design of the cars are top notch. The level of detail is crazy, from the tire smears on the body panels, to the dirt and grim from racing, to the carbon fiber weave, tire treads The story-line is great, and I can't wait for future editions. I could truly go on and on but I'll stop so I don't sound like a crazy person. You will not be disappointed with this book.

Great book. I'm neither a car guy or future ...

Great book. I'm neither a car guy or future fantasy fan, but as a designer, I find Daniel Simon's work among the most inspiring of all modern designers. Gorgeous machines, a brief, but solid, engaging and unique story line and a very nice coffee table format art book.
As an added bonus - It's fun to see peoples reaction. It catches 'em off guard a bit... after a few beers, it threw my buddy a curve. I played him and said, "Yeah, your a car guy and you haven't seen this race series?" A gal friend, who has no interest in cars, but an eye for design, said "Wow, how beautiful, I want to go there. Where is this?" I make sure people see it now.
