Fantastic book on how humans and the environment have interacted through history. DeFries description of the "Hatchet / Ratchet" cycle was incredibly interesting. Humans are constantly altering the world around us to better suit our needs and we are more often than not faced with the consequences that come with such alterations to the natural world. DeFries goes in depth on how our technological advances have allowed populations to thrive and have consequently also led to some of our worst downfalls. The author also demonstrates how the decisions of those in the past has led to many of the issues that plague or world today such as the great divide between those with too much and those with barely enough to survive. A great read for anyone interested on the human impact and sustainability.

Highly recommended for its readability and its fascinating story

THE BIG RACHET is a fascinating story of how civilization has creatively met the challenges of life from the earliest times up to the present. Ruth DeFries uses food production as the example of human innovation. The book is extremely well written in laymen language so that it is completely accessible.
Highly recommended for its positive outlook on where we are today and how we can go forward in terms of human perseverance and ability to solve its problems.

Course reading, loved it

I was assigned this book as a reading for a course, and I actually loved it. It was easy to read and really walked you through the history of humanity's interactions with nature, in the context of an interesting frame work of ratchets and hatchets. The beginning was slow, but she really hit her stride and drew me into the story by the middle of the book to the point it felt I was no longer doing an assigned reading, but was truly reading for fun. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their understanding of how we have innovated a way for the planet to support the population it does, and the potential challenges we will come to face as population continues to grow.

About the Author

Dr. Patricia Stevens, a retired Counselor Educator, is currently in private practice in Louisville, CO and consults in a variety of venues. Dr. Stevens has published and presented at the local, state, regional, national and international levels in the areas of substance abuse, gender implications in counseling, training counselors, and ethical and legal issues in counseling. She is a Fulbright Scholar and a Mental Health Disaster Relief volunteer for Red Cross and has been honored by her professional organizations and by her university for her teaching, scholarship, service and mentoring of students and staff. Dr. Stevens’ professional career in substance abuse issues has included clinical practice as well as research and publications throughout her career.

Robert L. Smith, Ph.D., FPPR, is professor, Chair of the Counseling and Educational Psychology Department, and Doctoral Program Coordinator at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. As a licensed psychologist, he has worked as a private practitioner in addition to serving as the chair of three counselor education programs. He is the author of several books and more than 60 professional articles. He serves as the Executive Director, and was one of the founders of, the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors. He is also the founder of the National Credentialing Academy for Family Therapists. His research interests include the efficacy of treatment modalities in individual psychotherapy, family therapy, and substance abuse counseling. He is a Diplomate-Fellow in Psychopharmacology with the International College of Prescribing Psychologists. Dr. Smith is an international lecturer. He is currently involved in the development and implementation of graduate programs in counseling and psychology in Latin America.

Content is excellent but the quality of the book is terrible. Every 3 pages is falling out of the book. Considering I paid over $100, I expect better quality from the publisher. I'm disappointed.

a pretty good substance abuse textbook

I just finished a graduate level course on substance abuse counseling, and this was my text. It's a pretty good textbook, with a lot of good information. Most of it is pretty dry reading though. Like a lot of graduate level textbooks, it's written in a dry yet information-dense style, which makes information retention challenging.

The best chapters by far are 1 - histories of various drugs of abuse, and 2 - their effects on the body.

I wasn't very fond of the sample cases they had in the text. I would have preferred a lot of "real life" case studies, with the interventions that were attempted, alternative interventions suggested by other experts, and outcomes.

A note for those using the supplemental online lab

If you are using this book for class and it requires online access to the mycounselinglab.com please use caution when ordering! I ordered this book from Amazon LLC and received a "new" copy that did NOT contain the lab access code. I had to contact customer service and have another one delivered only to find out that the second copy also did not include the code. I ended up having to buy the access code from the Pearson website and it costs an additional $40. You're better off buying the book with the lab code from your campus bookstore.

About the Author
Gordon M. Wardlaw, Ph.D., has taught introductory nutrition courses to students in the Department of Human Nutrition at The Ohio State University, and at other colleges and universities. Dr. Wardlaw is the author of many articles that have appeared in prominent nutrition, biology, physiology, and biochemistry journals and was the 1985 recipient of the American Dietetic Association’s Mary P. Huddleson Award. Dr. Wardlaw is a member of the American Society for Nutritional Sciences and is certified as a Specialist in Human Nutrition by the American Board of Nutrition. Dr. Wardlaw is currently retired from academia.

ANNE M. SMITH, Ph.D., R.D., L.D., is an associate professor at The Ohio State University. She was the recipient of the 1995 Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Human Ecology, the 2008 Outstanding Dietetic Educator Award from the Ohio Dietetic Association, the 2006 Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the Department of Human Nutrition, and the 2011 Distinguished Service Award from the College of Education and Human Ecology for her commitment to undergraduate education in nutrition. Dr. Smith’s research in the area of vitamin and mineral metabolism has appeared in prominent nutrition journals, and she was awarded the 1996 Research Award from the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. She is a member of the American Society for Nutrition and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

About the Author
Fred Lutgens and Ed Tarbuck are professors emeriti from Illinois Central College. They have been good friends and colleagues since 1970.  Between them, they have more than 60 years of experience teaching geoscience to undergraduates, and both have been recognized with awards as excellent and inspiring professors.   
 
Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science, in 1976.  That book, winner of the McGuffy Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, is now in its thirteenth edition.  In 1983, as the first edition of Earth was being prepared, renowned geoscience illustrator Dennis Tasa joined the author team.  Since then, the three have collaborated on more than 25 projects as the dominant author team franchise in the physical geosciences.

I could have written a better book about the atmosphere and I don't give a damn about the atmosphere.

What is annoying about this book, well basically the fact that everything can be found on Wikipedia, but if you are in college you will need this book so buy it then resell it here so we can save some college students some money. This book is not a bad read, but seriously if Wikipedia entries are more informative there is a damn problem.

Good for a textbook but not a reference book

Purchased from Amazon seller Jaydynomite. Insanely fast shipping!! Ordered 2/23 and received 2/28 with Standard Shipping! Book was exactly as described and matched the ISBN. Book was sold and described as "used" but in brand new condition!

With regard to the item itself, this this is one of the ubiquitous Pearson published college textbooks. This item did not come with any additional resources like a CD or digital code, but it was not needed for my class. Text is a good size for reading, there are lots of graphics - important for a science textbook - and the book is organized in the usual way with a chapter summary, glossary and content questions at the end of each chapter. Much of the information in the book can be easily found via free resources like NASA, NOAA, and other legitimate organizations. I doubt I'll use this book outside of class or even after as it is too basic to be a true reference book, but it is a good textbook.

The soft cover is no good in that the edges start to turn up

For the class I took I had to use this book a lot. The soft cover is no good in that the edges start to turn up. When I got halfway through the book two of the pages came out. I'm not sure if the book I had was just poorly made. Overall the information in the book is great and very detailed. The text is very easy to understand and the diagrams help in understanding what the text is talking about. Other then the material the book is made out of I would recommend this book. Also, the price beats the schools book store so that is a win win!

Doesn't work if you're between types

As a chronic insomniac, I was excited to read something that might offer new solutions. So I took the test and came out as a Dolphin, which seemed a perfect fit at first, since I am high strung and stay up at nights ruminating. But when I read further, lots of the what he said about dolphin didn't fit at all. I love to eat, for example (I've never forgotten a meal in my life, and sure wish I had that wiry thin body he talked about!). And far from getting a burst of evening energy, I generally feel so exhausted after 8pm I can barely string words together. So I seem to be hungry like a bear, high-strung like a dolphin, and rise early like a lion. What the heck am I? A Dol-bear-ion?

I had hoped buying the book would clear up for me what type I am, but it only further confounded me. And the advice for each type is wildly conflicting. Should I exercise in the morning like a Dolphin, or save it for afternoon, like a Lion, to give me more evening pep? Should I force myself to stay up till midnight (which would probably make me ill, is my guess), or go to bed with the sun? The advice conflicts so much that it only works if you fit neatly into one group or another.

This book clearly seems to be working for lots of people, but I'd recommend taking the online quiz before you buy it, and then reading through the descriptions of each of the types, first. If you find yourself to be a hybrid like me, you might as well skip the purchase and save your money.

EDITED TO ADD:

After finishing the book, there are a few pieces of advice that apply to any chronotype, that I wanted to share for those who feel, like me, that they don't fit into a specific type:

The first is to delay coffee until a couple of hours after awakening. According to the author, drinking caffeine immediately upon waking is a waste. For all types it's better to wait until you get an energy lull closer to mid-morning. On the other hand, no type should drink caffeine within eight hours of wanting to go to sleep, so don't wait too long. And limit yourself to one or two cups a day.

Second, no type should sleep in on the weekends. He's very firm about this. For all types, it's better to lose a bit of sleep on the weekends (if you're staying out late and socializing) then to sleep in and wind up with "social jetlag" which will throw off your entire week. The most anyone should sleep in is an extra 30-45 minutes.

Finally, for all types, use sunshine, exercise, protein, and cold showers when you want to wake yourself up or give yourself some extra pep. Then use warm baths, meditation, stretching, and carbs when you want the opposite, to be winding down and preparing for sleep. So, if you have trouble waking up in the morning, start out with some push ups (or whatever) followed by a cold shower, a walk outside, and a plate of eggs. If you get tired too early in the evenings and want to be able to stay up later, then use those things in the late afternoon. Conversely, if you are too alert in the evenings and have trouble falling asleep, then eat some carbs, stretch, meditate, and have a warm bath at or after dinner time.

That advice all seems pretty sound to me and it's the advice I'm taking from the book and applying, despite feeling like I don't fit neatly into a chronotype. He also has a chapter on adjusting to jet lag that some might find helpful.

This Book Will Change The Way You Think About Time, Sleep, Sex, Work Based On The Science Of Chronotypes

Dr. Michael Breus has written a book that will cause you to rethink virtually every area of your life. This book is about so much more than just time management and when to do things, it explores your Chronotype and breaks down more than 100 circadian patterns to discover your personal best time to do everything based on your chronotype.

The book starts with a simple quiz that helps you determine your Chronotype. Chronotype is the scientific study and classification of your personal biological energy patterns based on circadian rhythms. Everyone has a unique chronotype that determines your peak energy flows throughout the day. The book also helps you understand the positive combination of hormones with your peak energy states in every area of your life. By understanding the critical combination of hormone production and energy you can time the best time of the day to do everything.

After taking the quiz, I found out I was a bear chronotype. I've begun using the timing suggestions for when to sleep and wake up and when to be most effective in my work and so far, I've woken up more refreshed every day. It did require that I make a change to when I went to bed and got up. There is a formula for determining your best time to sleep based on your chronotype. I also moved as much of my work as I could that required strong problem solving into different areas of the day and it has made a significant difference in my ability to focus.

Each chapter focuses on a specific topic like when to exercise, when to have sex, when to focus on creative efforts, or when to sleep and breaks the chapter down for your chronotype. I like the specificity of each section for the chronotype. After a brief introduction to the topic of each chapter you can dig into what is relevant to you. It is important to read your spouse or partner's chronotype as well to better understand their daily patterns so that you can maximize or improve your interactions with them. I was surprised to find out that my chronotype should have sex on Saturday mornings!

I like this book because it is supported by evidence based studies. The title might make you think that it is based on pop psychology or made up idees, it is not. While very easy and fun to read, it brings serious science to bear and provides you with a great jumping off point if you want to dig into the research. I also like all the additional resources and video explanations on the authors website, he gives you more examples, details and exercises that you can do to become more efficient at maximizing your personal chronotype.

While I got an early review copy of the book, I found it so intriguing that I bought it for my employees and close family members. I really feel like this is a book that everyone needs to read to finally understand how and when to sleep and how to properly time their day to reach maximum effectiveness throughout the day.

Whatever it is its working

I am slowly implementing some suggestions like waking, commuting, work hours, delaying caffeine - even scheduling interactions with others according to what I think their chronotype might be. I have more energy later in the day, I am not snacking as much as I used to and I am paying more attention to other peoples moods - which I am sure they would appreciate if they knew. Ultimately even if this is placebo - its working and I think it is worth a try. I deducted a star because it assumes the working world works the day shift and doesn't address how to adjust your schedule if you are working a night shift. Maybe that's a new book.
