This book was hugely disappointing. I realize that I am offering the first dissenting opinion, but I notice that most of the people who give “The Profitable Consultant” a 5-star rating refer to the author by first name. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Jay Niblick has 175 people working for him and plenty of clients, but his book reveals him to be supercilious, a poor communicator, and unwilling to document any of his advice (with a couple of exceptions) with data. Because so much of the book is opinion stated as fact, readers must accept that the author is an expert because he is financially successful. The writing is poorly organized and not always clear.

Niblick is condescending and disrespectful of readers at times. For instance, someone qualified to be a consultant probably doesn’t need a how-to book to know that they will need office equipment and a place to work when they become self-employed.

Niblick has a thinly disguised hidden agenda, which is to encourage and protect high consultant fees. In a capitalist country, that is arguably an admirable objective, but some of the ethics he expresses for commanding those fees are sleazy.

“The Profitable Consultant” isn’t a complete waste of time. Much of the advice is valid. However, the good advice in the book can also be found in many better books about how to start a business.

This is a "must read"

If you are a consultant or hoping to become one, this is the book for you. It is the most comprehensive treatment of issues and decisions facing a consulting business. Jay addresses those issues directly and offers practical solutions. I first bought the Kindle edition, but am now buying hard covers because this book will be a bedrock in my library.The Profitable Consultant: Starting, Growing, and Selling Your Expertise. This is a companion to Jay's other book[[ASIN:0615283764 What's Your Genius

Practical, Profitable, Common Sense for the Business Consultant

Jay hits the mark time and again on the basics in starting up a consultancy practice. Moreover, his recommendations on Education Based Marketing are huge pluses. He has provided critically important and helpful, guiding tips based on years of experience in the practice of consulting and coaching himself - as well as coaching others to become more successful. As a beneficiary of Jay's practical, profitable, and common sense approach I highly recommend other consultants and coaches to read the book. It's a great way for you to re-focus on how to grow your practice through a variety of methods and have the time to kick back and enjoy the benefits.
