Before the Fall, by Noah Hawley

New York Times Bestseller

From the Emmy, PEN, Peabody, Critics' Choice, and Golden Globe Award-winning creator of the TV show Fargo comes the thriller of the year.

On a foggy summer night, eleven people--ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter--depart Martha's Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are Scott Burroughs--the painter--and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul's family.

With chapters weaving between the aftermath of the crash and the backstories of the passengers and crew members--including a Wall Street titan and his wife, a Texan-born party boy just in from London, a young woman questioning her path in life, and a career pilot--the mystery surrounding the tragedy heightens. As the passengers' intrigues unravel, odd coincidences point to a conspiracy. Was it merely by dumb chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something far more sinister at work? Events soon threaten to spiral out of control in an escalating storm of media outrage and accusations. And while Scott struggles to cope with fame that borders on notoriety, the authorities scramble to salvage the truth from the wreckage.

Amid pulse-quickening suspense, the fragile relationship between Scott and the young boy glows at the heart of this stunning novel, raising questions of fate, human nature, and the inextricable ties that bind us together.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of June 2016: Noah Hawley’s new novel begins with the crash of a private plane carrying some very influential people on board. The only survivors are the young son of a media mogul and an obscure painter who, given his less than elevated status, seems like a wild card from the start. What happened on that flight? Why did the plane go down and if it was intentional, who was the target? With each chapter of Before the Fall, Hawley peels back another layer of the lives of those onboard that fatal flight meanwhile, the media speculation and accusations in the days after the crash threaten to overwhelm truth and decency. The end is surprising, even a little bit of a “huh.” moment at first, but it’s an ending that sinks in and starts the wheels turning on everything that came before it, which, to me, is the hallmark of an unforgettable story. --Seira Wilson, The Amazon Book Review

Review
"This is one of the year's best suspense novels, a mesmerizing, surprise-jammed mystery that works purely on its own, character-driven terms....Mr. Hawley has made it very, very easy to race through his book in a state of breathless suspense."―Janet Maslin, New York Times

"BEFORE THE FALL is a ravishing and riveting beauty of a thriller. It's also a deep exploration of desire, betrayal, creation, family, fate, mortality, and rebirth. It's one part Dennis Lehane, one part Dostoevsky. I was spellbound from first page to last; I haven't fully recovered yet."―Michael Cunningham, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Hours

"Noah Hawley really knows how to keep a reader turning the pages, but there's more to the novel than suspense. On one hand, BEFORE THE FALL is a complex, compulsively readable thrill ride of a novel. On the other hand, it is an exploration of the human condition, a meditation on the vagaries of human nature, the dark side of celebrity, the nature of art, the power of hope and the danger of an unchecked media. The combination is a potent, gritty thriller that exposes the high cost of news as entertainment and the randomness of fate."―Kristin Hannah, New York Times Book Review

"[A] terrific thriller...an irresistible mystery.. a tale that's both an intriguing puzzle and a painful story of human loss."―Patrick Anderson, Washington Post

"Imagine that Agatha Christie had set a closed-room mystery on an airplane and included Wall Street and entertainment executive types in her lineup of suspects. Now imagine that airplane crashing into the Atlantic before the story even gets going....Mr. Hawley, the expert TV showrunner, obviously had the skills to pull this off."―New York Times, "The Top Books of 2016"

"I started and finished BEFORE THE FALL in one day. That begins to tell you what kind of smart, compellingly dramatic read it is.

So read it."―James Patterson, #1 New York Times bestselling author and winner of the National Book Foundation's 2015 Literarian Award

One great chapter.......
By Escondido
Scott, an undistinguished painter, a recovering alcoholic, and a general sad sack, runs into a woman he knows casually while at the farmer's market on Martha's Vineyard. He's there for the summer to paint, she's there with her family to enjoy life as one of the mega-rich. They chat, she mentions that they'll be returning to New York that evening. Scott intends to return to the city the next morning and is offered a free ride back on their private jet. He accepts. And then the unthinkable happens. The plane crashes into the ocean just minutes after departure killing all on board except Scott and the four year old son of the woman and her renowned husband.

The chapter that follows this terrible crash is one of the most exciting and well written I've read. Scott's disorientation is palpable as he comes to consciousness. The sea is dark, the sky is foggy, no stars can be seen to guide him. And then the whimpering cries of the boy reach his ears. I'm not giving anything away to say that they survived. But why should the plane have crashed? Many authorities believe it to be sabotage. One of the other passengers was about to be indicted for some big financial crime. Speculation runs wild amount the investigation agencies and the press.

We get short chapters defining the personal histories of all the passengers and crew on board. Okay, fine. This device isn't new and usually serves to let the reader have some investment in the outcome. As I stated, the "escape" from the sea was a thrilling bit of writing. The supporting players bios began to get a little tedious as the info was parceled out sparingly. I was losing interest in the outcome at about 70% but stuck with it anyway.

And then, what happened? Suddenly we're at the end and rather than giving the reader a unique and original ending, the author wrapped up the mystery with something ripped right from the headlines. I felt cheated, duped, in fact. So you may want to wait for the price to drop before committing to purchase this book. I will say that the writing is fine but it seems to me that the author merely tacked on an easy ending that took no thought at all.

A FRIENDLY WARNING FOR PROSPECTIVE READERS
By Kenneth C. Mahieu
DO NOT READ THE TABLE OF CONTENTS BEFORE READING THE NOVEL - YOU MAY BE TIPPEDTO THE IDENTITY OF THE RESPONSIBLE PARTY.....

I am a big fan of the author's "Fargo" TV series, so I was sold on this book before reading a Patrick Anderson review in the Washington Post. A quick glance at the Amazon page for the book will reveal that early on there is a crash of a private jet with eleven on board and most are killed. The plane was heading from Martha's Vineyard to Teterboro Airport in New Jersey near Manhattan and 'falls' into the sea. Now the investigation begins to determine what happened and who is responsible. Hawley's story telling skills are excellent and in this book he interweaves investigation chapters with chapters on each of the people on board. Hard to put down.

As the end approaches, two climaxes, each on a separate track, are building. It has a satisfying ending and lots of interesting characters and I hope to see another from Hawley soon. However, "Before the Fall" is not without its flaws. I really doubt that anyone could have survived the crash. Secondly, the responsible party's actions are just too much of a stretch for me. And finally, a 26 year old, attractive billionaires, naked, slips into bed with a middle aged guy who hasn't had sex in five years, and you're never going to believe what happens next, perhaps the most incredible scene of all. So put it all together and it spells four star, but a good fun read.

This would probably make a good movie, but it's slow on paper
By MelissaJean
At it's core, this book had a good story, I just wish someone had reminded the author that he was writing a book and not a script for a new movie. I enjoy reading, and it generally takes me a day or two to finish a book. This took forever. The author seemed so lost in the details and seemed to enjoy his own inner monologue so much that it was just a struggle to get through. It felt like driving down a road filled with stop lights; every time the story was going somewhere you hit a red and had to wait as he over stuffed you with unnecessary details and sentences until you could get going again. He comes off as inexperienced, rather than giving actual story content he just rambles about pointless things and tries to pass them off as profound.

There were a lot of short sentences that were unnecessary and annoying, like when he felt the need to explain what humidity was, or he had to put "the pilot closed the door, (Which had been open)" even though the paragraph later goes on to describe thoroughly how the door had been open. Then there were longer explanations that just made me want to scream. About half a chapter was used to describe in detail two men using a public restroom. The point of that section was the men being worried about the FBI, but rather than working it into the story like a more skilled author would do, he created a long and rambling section of what exactly happens in the bathroom.

The author also comes off as incredibly pretentious. So many times he goes on and on about some thought he clearly believes philosophical, but really it's just irritating. At one point he went on a "are the machines working for us or us for them?" rant, that kind of came out of no where. He also uses phrases like, "the scene was this:" and "he showed her his palm" rather than just saying he waved. Another thing I found irritating was how the author seemed to latch on to a phrase he liked and then used it again and again. We hear repeatedly how Uncle Logan was a Rye drinker with sculpted hair, and how Emma lived her life in turnaround time.

All this, coupled with the fact that almost every character has this random stutter and the author includes pauses between almost every sentence in a conversation, just makes the book drag on and on. After about the 4th character back story I was absolutely sick of them and the only thing that kept me hanging on was how several other reviews mentioned some big plot twist. I honestly didn't think there was a surprise at all and from the moment we were introduced to the character responsible I thought he might have a hand in it. Not to mention the parts leading up to the "twist" go at a snails pass so there was really plenty of time to figure out what was going to happen.

Overall I'm baffled as to how this book got so many reviews, except for the fact that this author has such an extensive resume that maybe people just WANT to like it and so they do. But someone with as much experience as he does should know better than to make the immature blunders we see time and time again.
