The author ventures to express not merely his hope, but his confident expectation, that these novel and interesting theorems - some British, but the greater part derived from French and German sources - will widen the outlook of our mathematical instructors and lend new vigour to their teaching.

The book includes some articles contributed by the present writer to the Educational Times Reprint, to whose editor he would offer his sincere thanks for the great encouragement which he has derived from such recognition. He is also most grateful to Sir George Greenhill, Prof. A. C. Dixon, Mr. V. R. Aiyar, Mr. W .F. Beard, Mr. R. F. Davis, and Mr. E. P. Rouse for permission to use the theorems due to them.

About the Author
TIMOTHY M. NOLAN, Ph.D., is president of Innovative Outcomes, Inc., in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is also president of the Applied Strategic Planning Institute, an organization committed to making the strategic-management technology advanced by this book broadly available. His consulting practice is devoted to the related areas of strategy development and innovation. Dr. Nolan's clients range from new businesses to the largest coporations and include for-profit, not-for-profit, and governmental organizations.

LEONARD D. GOODSTEIN, Ph.D., is a consulting psychologist based in Washington, D.C., and a senior vice president of Pfeiffer & Company. Dr. Goodstein is the former executive vice president and CEO of the American Psychological Association, and he served as president and chairman of the board of University Associates, Inc., following thirty years as a professor of psychology at three major American universities. As a consultant to management, he specializes in strategic planning and executive development.

J. WILLIAM PFEIFFER, Ph.D., J.D., president of Pfeiffer & Company, is an experienced consultant to business and government. From the time that I began medical school, it has always been my passion to try to help as many of my patients as possible. I was never satisfied with sending patients home with the cliché: "Sorry, we just don't have any answers for you." For me, and for my patients, conventional medicine had many answers, but sometimes they weren't enough.
     Starting my 42-year medical career as a family physician, I delivered babies, did some minor surgery and worked in the emergency room, providing the most comprehensive care that I could. Over the years, I found that other disciplines (some of which were already included in the scope of medical practice, and some of which were tangential) held the promise of providing useful answers for those patents who did not respond adequately to conventional medical treatments.
     So I threw myself into studying as many of these as I could find. I spent hours learning osteopathic manipulation, acupuncture, homeopathy, Reichian therapy, herbal supplementation, prolotherapy, chelation, amongst others. Each new field clearly added another dimension to improving my practice of medicine. As we learned more and more about the biochemical underpinnings of chronic illness, (a field often referred to as "functional medicine") I was able to provide better medical care.
     Slowly my practice evolved into something new, that didn't really have a name, and I called it Complex Medical Problem Solving. Over time, I found myself working mostly with those unfortunate patients who had not received a diagnosis from conventional medicine and were suffering with persistent and debilitating illness. These included Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Lyme Disease with its co-infections, Autism, and all varieties of Chronic Pain, amongst others.
     Several years ago I began to teach my colleagues what I had learned about working with chronically ill patients, and I called this course: "What Every Physician Should Know About Working With Complex Medical Illness." My patients asked me to provide this same information in a simplified but understandable form, and that is how this book evolved.
     My text is derived from the distillation of countless patient visits. When I found a patient's eyes glazing over as I began to explain some details of biochemistry...I took note. When they sat up, alertly, and asked cogent questions....I also took note.
     Despite my many years of clinical practice, I am still optimistic that I can help every single person who comes through my door. The truth is that I haven't been able to do that, but the truth is also that I have helped the vast majority of them to improve or heal. It is that experience that motivated me to write "Healing is Possible...". There are millions of suffering individuals who have not been able to be clearly diagnosed or helped by conventional medicine, and who are not aware that help is indeed possible. This book was intended to be a starting point for their journey into health, and it is my hope that it will reach as many patients as possible.

A book for everyone with chronic systemic illnesses

Dr. Nathan is an Integrative Medicine doctor who has more than forty years experience, first as a family medicine practitioner and then as an Integrative Medicine MD. He realized that patients like me with complicated systemic chronic illnesses have fallen through the cracks of the conventional medicine system simply because that system is set up to treat one health problem, not a whole host of them. He's attempting to change that and give those people hope and a chance at healing.

In parts one and two of the book he identifies the 12 most common health issues related to chronic illness based on his experiences with his patients: adrenal deficiencies, magnesium deficiency, thyroid imbalance, sex hormone imbalances, food allergies, gut permeability, blood sugar imbalances, heavy metal toxicity, mold-related illnesses, chronic infections, amino acid & neurotransmitter imbalances, and methylation errors. Those with chronic illnesses can have one, a handful, or all of the above problems and more; identifying and treating them is the key to better health. He goes through each issue one by one and talks about why it's important to good health, how the issue can originate, gives the best way to test for it, the treatment protocols that have worked best in his medical practice, patient success stories and finally resources for further reading. There is little to no guesswork involved in his treatment plans. Most of the medical problems can be verified by tests, though some require specialized labs. Treatment varies based on the health issue and can combine standard drugs, compounded drugs, IV nutrients, supplements, osteopathic manipulation, and lifestyle changes.

Part three involves new approaches to pain relief. He explains conventional medicine's approach to injury and how it differs from his and his colleagues. He believes that treating injuries properly before they become chronic pain issues is ideal and possible. This can be done with a variety of techniques including manual medicine (chiropractic, osteopathic and craniosacral therapy), prolotherapy which involves injecting an injured ligament or tendon with a benign irritant which stimulates the body's own healing abilities, FSM (Frequency Specific Microcurrent) therapy which resets the nervous system with targeted electrical microcurrent, and LENS (Low-Energy Neurofeedback System) which is a form of biofeedback for the brain that has helped people with cognitive impairment and brain fog regain brain function and mental clarity.

Part four goes into other concepts and treatments for chronic illness including chelation for heart disease, the importance of sleep, alternative treatments for cancer and autoimmune disease, and autism.

Part five extends the scope of the book further, looking at the big picture when it comes to illness and healing. This section contains chapters on the environment's impact on health, the importance of listening both by the doctor and the patient, the monetary cost of chronic illness, and the choices and mindsets that can make a patient's health worse or better. This part contains mostly his observations and thoughts and I found it quite compelling. The overall message is that healing begins in the attitude of the patient. The last line of the book sums up how I feel about my own journey to better health: "Healing requires not just hope, but also commitment and dedication."

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone with chronic systemic illnesses. Even a patient who doesn't want to go down the Integrative Medicine path could learn something from this book. For someone like myself who has nearly reached the limit of my doctor's knowledge and my own research up to this point, this book gives me more avenues of testing and treatment. I already had hope of healing; this book gives me a greater chance of achieving it.

My only criticism is that the Kindle version had major formatting issues but that doesn't change the content.

Dr Neil Nathan's book is an oasis in the desert

Healing is Possible is a must read, go-to guide for:

-anyone who has fallen through the medical cracks with illness such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia or chronic pain;
-anyone who has been to multiple health practitioners but is still struggling with illness
-and anyone who has spent a great deal of time, money and effort to feel better, yet find themselves treading water or even going backward.

This book is a gem. It gives the reader and their family, as well as their doctor(s) reason for hope. It is a resource filled with cutting edge technologies. Personal stories are sprinkled throughout each chapter outlining treatments that have restored lives.

Dr. Neil Nathan is a compassionate, forward thinking leader in his field and gives reassurance throughout the book’s pages that “Healing is (in fact) possible”. I have struggled with "Chronic Fatigue" for the last thirteen years. I went to approximately fifty health practitioners before I found Dr. Nathan’s book. I wish I had had it sooner. I would have saved money, time, and effort. And would have recovered my life before this.

Within a couple months of reading this book (and being under Dr Nathan’s care) we learned through testing that I have black mold poisoning from previous exposure to a water damaged building and it is now being addressed. I have not felt this hopeful in years.

I am telling everyone who might benefit from Dr. Nathan’s book about it. What makes Dr. Nathan’s book notable and unique is the combination of both his medical knowledge and his sensitivity, patience, and willingness to dig deeper.

The book details six major and six minor imbalances that are often overlooked in treating chronic pain and illness. When enough of these imbalances have been addressed, the patient’s innate healing process is kick started.

“Healing is Possible” is an enjoyable read. A big thank you to Dr. Nathan for writing it with such insight, understanding and compassion!

This book has some encouraging "out of the box" ideas for chronic health issues

I went to see Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum about 8 years ago and he wrote the forward for this book. He told me I did not have fibromyalgia, but I had an energy issue--chronic fatigue. Dr. T. is a wonderful and wise doctor who is renowned for his expertise in these two areas. Dr. Neil Nathan had some great ideas here that I had not heard of before such as the transfer factor (when it comes to Epstein Barr as a triggering factor and other herpes simplex viruses) and all magnesium supplements and mode of taking magnesium are not created equal. He also has found DHEA to be an important factor in helping get many patients back to feeling good. I found this book offers hope and I keep referring back to it.

Commercial Design Using Revit Architecture 2011 is designed for the architectural student using Revit Architecture 2011. Commercial Design Using Autodesk Revit Architecture 2011 is an updated version of the 2010 book. It is an excellent tutorial on producing a finished commercial building using Autodesk Revit Architecture. This book and its counterpart, Residential Design Using Autodesk Revit Architecture 2011, are a must for any beginner to intermediate user of Revit Architecture. Following the step by step tutorial style book, a design is built from the ground up with all the explanations needed to complete a Residential or Commercial designed building. Each year Revit is updated and these tutorial books keep up with the latest release. These books are used in colleges, trades schools and high schools.

John Stine Provides A Comprhensive Format To Learn Revit

I purchased this book "Commercial Design Using Revit Architecture 2011" by John Stine because of another book by John Stine, "Residential Design Using Revit Architecture 2011" and I find this just as good by providing step by step instuctions along with pictures of what the screen looks like at each point of the instructions along with highlights and arrows pointing to what needs to be selected. If you are at the beginner or intermediate level this books offers a clear and consise approach from which to learn from.

I had to get this book for my revit class and i really enjoyed it. I never sold my book back because i still refer to the book when i need help. The directions are very clear and don't skip any steps. I highly recommend this book!

About the Author

Frank R. Kardes is a Professor of Marketing at the University of Cincinnati and a former faculty member of the Sloan School of Management at MIT. His research focuses on a wide range of topics in consumer psychology and product management&151;including consumer judgment and inference processes, persuasion and advertising, the pioneering brand advantage, and judgment based on limited evidence. His research has appeared in many leading scientific journals, and he is frequently invited to present his research at leading universities throughout the world (including Wharton, INSEAD, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the London Business School). He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Consumer Psychology, International Journal of Research in Marketing, International Quarterly Journal of Marketing, and Marketing Letters. Dr. Kardes is a former Co-Editor of the Journal of Consumer Psychology, and Advances in Consumer Research, and is currently an Associate Editor of the Journal of Consumer Research. Dr. Kardes is a former President of the Society for Consumer Psychology and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, the Society for Consumer Psychology, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology.

When people ask me what I do for a living, I tell them I'm a consumer psychologist and then I brace myself for a wide range of interesting reactions: Some people ask if I'm reading their minds, and others ask if I believe in mind control. When I respond that I don't believe in mind reading, mind control, ESP, or reincarnation, I half expect some people to say, "What's wrong with you? Don't you have any flaky beliefs?" Unfortunately, most people don't realize that consumer behavior can be studied scientifically, and many fail to appreciate how effectively science can be used to debunk myths. Scientific methods can be used to investigate the psychology of advertising, the psychology of consumer judgment, and decision making. Consumers are frequently unable to explain how an ad influenced them or why they made a particular purchase. Fortunately, scientific research can be used to uncover mental processes and influences that affect consumers with or without their knowledge. This is what I find most fascinating about scientific consumer research, and this is what this book is all about.

The scientific perspective is used throughout this book because research has shown that training in science (a) helps students to become critical thinkers (i.e., to not believe everything they read or hear), (b) helps students to improve their creative problem-solving skills, and (c) helps students to develop better decision-making skills (see Chapter 1). Critical thinking and strong problem-solving and decision-making skills are important to anyone who wants to be an effective manager in today's complex and extremely competitive marketplace. Firms need managers with strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, and this book is designed to help students attain these important skills.

Consumer behavior is the study of people's responses to products and services and the marketing of products and services. The focus on the consumer is the key contribution of marketing to business practice: other business functions (e.g., finance, accounting, production) ignore the consumer. However, managers who really understand their consumers develop higher quality products and services, promote their products and services more effectively, and devise marketing plans and strategies that foster sustainable competitive advantages for their firm.

This book is organized in three main sections. Section I explains how consumers acquire, remember, and use information about products and services. Section II focuses on persuasion and influence, and explains how to influence consumers more successfully through the effective use of advertising, promotion, and other marketing tools. Section III examines managerial decision making. This section helps students to apply the arsenal of marketing tools and principles available to them. It also explains common decision-making biases and errors that plague managers and offers tools and strategies for avoiding these pitfalls.

NEW TO THE SECOND EDITION

The second edition has been updated with nearly 100 new references to help students keep abreast of the latest developments in scientifically grounded consumer research. This edition also features a new chapter on Online Consumer Behavior. This chapter explains how the Internet has changed the way consumers shop and the way products and services are marketed to consumers. In addition, the entire book has been updated significantly. Section I now opens with important new material on the key ways consumers differ from one another in terms of motives for buying and personality traits. These motives and traits are linked to current trends in the marketplace identified by executives from the DuPont Corporation. In addition, new material on really long-term memory has also been added to Section I. Section II opens with a new in-depth discussion of how to persuade consumers who are trying to avoid persuasion. Consumers recognize that advertisements are designed to influence their purchase decisions, and consumers often attempt to avoid, reduce, or correct for unwanted influences on their judgments and decisions. Group influence is also now discussed in much greater detail in Section II. Section III now includes important new material on group decision making. Managers often work together in groups (e.g., committee meetings) when attempting to solve problems faced by their firms. Group settings create the potential for a number of serious decision making biases and errors. Numerous other updates and improvements have been added throughout the second edition.

To help students understand and apply the concepts of consumer behavior to real companies and marketing situations, Consumer Behavior and Managerial Decision Making is filled with interesting examples, visuals, and exercises—including use of the Internet. The text not only discusses the principles and scientific research of consumer behavior but also demonstrates how companies and organizations use them every day. Chapter Outlines. Chapter outlines list the major text headings to introduce students and instructors to concepts the chapter will cover.
Opening Vignettes. Each chapter begins with a discussion of a real company, product, or situation to bring the subject of the chapter alive. For example, one opening vignette discusses the National Basketball Association's use of its athletes' global appeal to market its "brand" and products to worldwide audiences.
Introduction. Each chapter introduction leads students from the vignette into the main subject of the chapter, serving as a bridge from the vignette's example to chapter contents.
Taking Issue Boxes. The "Taking Issue" boxes use real companies or situations to discuss ethical issues in consumer behavior. Some of the issues explored in the book include the use of credit card logos to encourage consumer spending, new online stock trading, and Coca-Cola's agreement with Boys & Girls Clubs of America to sponsor tournaments and promote Coke products. Every chapter has a "Taking Issue" box to spur students to think about consumer behavior issues that surround them.
Making the Decision Boxes. The "Making the Decision" boxes, which appear once or twice in each chapter, show how companies implement consumer behavior principles in their marketing and advertising campaigns or how consumer decisions affect companies. These boxes profile both solid and questionable company decisions. For example, one box discusses different companies' use of the Internet to enhance product demonstrations and provide additional consumer information, and another discusses Mercedes' decision to build a low-priced, basic car, which fights against its premium image in the marketplace.
Advertisements, Web Sites, Photos, and Illustrations. Advertisements and Web site URLs appear throughout the text to show students how companies appeal to consumers. Many Web sites are included to demonstrate how marketers are using the Internet's global reach to tap new markets. Photographs of products discussed in the text supplement chapter discussions, and colorful graphs and charts summarize and help reinforce major text concepts.
Key Concepts and Glossary. Key concepts are boldfaced in the chapter where they are defined. Boldfacing terms helps students locate and review important consumer behavior concepts. An end-of-book glossary compiles all terms and definitions presented in the text.
Chapter Summaries. The summary at the end of each chapter provides a quick recap of the concepts discussed. Students can check their comprehension of the chapter by reviewing the summary.
Key Concepts List. Following the chapter summary is a list of the key concepts presented in the chapter. A quick review of the list reinforces students' comprehension.

Best CB book on the market

Kardes' book is by far the best consumer behavior book on the market. Business success is ultimately determined by the decisions of consumers. Accordingly, it is essential for managers to be well grounded in the principles of consumer behavior and decision making. No other book comes close at providing readers with knowledge of CB that can be easily and immediately applied to improve business function. It should be required reading for all MBA students.

Awesome book!!

I learned a lot of things to do with my spouse to keep the spice in my marriage. As a newly married couple we have date nights but nothing like this book discussed. This book gave us some great ideas that will help us step il our marriage to the next level. A must read for couples!!!!!
