Music Theory And The Nashville Number System: For Songwriters & Performers, by Odie Blackmon

"Music Theory And The Nashville Number System" is based on Grammy nominated hit songwriter Odie Blackmon's class at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music. Designed for songwriters, performers, musicians and audio engineers who know how to play chords on guitar or piano but haven't connected the dots of music theory or the Nashville Number System. Blackmon's book uses piano keyboard and guitar fretboard examples to prepare the student to communicate with other musicians, better understand how scales and chords works together, use chord extensions and inversions, see common patterns in chord progressions through number chart analysis, and read and write Nashville Number charts. Example charts are hand written by Blackmon and a host of Nashville's top studio players on hits they played.

A very useful and well-written book by Mr. Blackmon. As a professional session and touring musician, the Nashville Number System has been a huge part of my musical vocabulary for 25 years. I constantly use it everyday on sessions from Jon Bon Jovi to ABC's "Nashville" television show. It has become universally know from Nashville to Los Angeles to Sweden. I can't imagine being a modern working musician and not being familiar with the Nashville Number System.

Not enough on Nashville Number System.
By ctownjak
I am a guitarist and songwriter with a moderate (not a lot) amount of knowledge of interval and chord theory. I wanted a reference to the Nashville Number System. Out of the few books on Amazon dedicated to this topic, I picked this book because of the prestige of the author and also, regarding music reference books, price tends to be a good indicator of the quality. After going through this book I will be returning it and checking out Chas Williams spiral bound book on NNS or perhaps Jim Riley's "Song Charting Made Easy" instead.

The main problem is from the prominent mention of the NNS on the cover, I expected a significant portion of the content to reflect the NNS. The book is mostly music theory, much of it diagrammed for piano as well as guitar, and only a small portion is about the NNS. My constructive criticism would be to remove NNS from the title of the book. That would clear up the expectation from many of us amateur musicians looking to learn the NNS.

The book includes chords and lyrics from many very famous songwriters such as the Beatles and Smokey Robinson. Maybe I missed it, but I do not see in the first few pages, nor on the content pages, any indication that these songs were represented with the approval of the songwriters. Were they or were they not? Maybe this author knows all of these famous people and got a handshake agreement to publish simple scores of their songs. Whether the book leaves out the text, "used by permission" or, no permission was granted, either is an egregious error from a songwriter of all people.

I should include the positive that this is a decent book to help someone begin to build chords on guitar and piano, if that is what you are looking for.
