About the Author
Adam Gerber has been using Android Studio since early beta to develop Android applications professionally and to instruct his students at the University of Chicago, where he teaches Android Application Development, among other courses. Adam is a member of the Chicago Innovation Exchange and consults on mobile technology and innovation. Adam holds a Bachelors degree in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois and a PhD with honors in Management Science from the Conservatoire National des Arts et M�tiers in Paris. Clifton Craig is an early adopter of Android Studio and a longtime user of the IntelliJ platform. Clifton has over 16 years of professional software development experience and 8 years of experience in various mobile technologies ranging from J2ME and BREW to iOS and Android. A very good book, but needs some improvements

This book does a fantastic job describing Android Studio app development and supporting tools (Git, Gradle, ...). The coding projects it gives are really good, illustrating the essentials of app development. But, some of the most important android software classes that they use (e.g. Intents, Adapters, Broadcasts, Notifications, Transactions, etc) are hard to find, since they are not mentioned in either the Table of Contents or the sparse Index. If there is another edition of the book (I hope there is one), it could improve the Index, add also add a chapter discussing some important classes and methods in the SDK. This should be done before Chapter 7 about Git, where many of these classes are used without any description of them (e.g., Intents). This makes Chapter 7 particularly murky, and difficult to understand. Chapter 8 is clearer, with some discussion of android classes and methods. Then, in Chapters 9 and 10, there are a few good descriptions of android classes etal. For example, Intents are finally described near the end of Chapter 9; although, there is no reference to this in the Index. Also, what it means to inflate android Views is finally described near the start of Chapter 10, but again is not referenced in the Index. These descriptions are needed much earlier in the book, before they are actually used in the "Labs".

I would have given this book 5 stars, except for this lack of clarity, and lack of content referencing.

A great book to learn Android without much mobile development experience

This is a great book to learn Android without much mobile development experience. I went through the book and found that it successfully described the main feature of the latest Android development. It also provides four labs with sample codes. In addition, it teaches me how to use git in my project. Version control is an important lesson for beginners, but few books try to address it. Finally, I want to say it's fun to learn Android with the book.

Confronted with losing the distinction between free and slave, rebel Southerners created a common whiteness to solve their post-Civil War-era problems, argues Hale (history, Univ. of Virginia). They built a nationalism of denial, a world of white and black, of power and fear. In literature, the marketplace, and public spectacle, they crafted a collectivity based on segregation as a culture, making whiteness a racial identity and the American norm even while asserting that it was natural and not the product of human choice. And as Hale shows in this absorbing cultural history of racial construction, it wasn't just white Southerners who embraced the individual and collective identity of superiority but Northerners as well. Her thesis on the evolution of racial identity in this country is not entirely new but is greatly enhanced by her fine literary and cultural detail. First-timer Hale's impressive examination of the Jim Crow Southan erudite intellectual survey of the sweeping social, historical, and economic trends that shaped white racial identity in opposition to blacknessis obscured by deadly academic jargon. The central myth Hale debunks is that whiteness is an organic, rather than manufactured, racial identitythat it is, somehow, the American norm. She identifies several large cultural forces that influenced white racial identity. The replacement of local merchandise with a national mass market, for example, gave rise to advertising (much of it created in the North) that manipulated southerners' nostalgic remembrance of loyal, subservient slaves by using African-American icons like Aunt Jemima to sell goods to a nationwide audiencepresumed to be entirely white. Advances in printing technology made it easier to distribute demeaning images of African-Americans, reinforcing negative stereotypes. Just as black racial identity was largely defined in relation to whiteness after Reconstruction, Hale asserts, whiteness was defined by blackness. Analyzing how whites of different economic and educational backgrounds shared a unified sense of supremacy, she fleshes out Ralph Ellison's famous declaration: ``Southern whites cannot walk, talk, sing, conceive of laws or justice, think of sex, love, the family or freedom without responding to the presence of Negroes.'' But in place of Ellison's simple eloquence, Hale raises an impenetrable thicket of theoretical jargon (terms like transhistorical, isomorphic, and dialectics rain like candy from a Mardi Gras float). She glosses the Civil War's outcome thus: ``Union victory delegitimated that nascent nationalist collectivity, the Confederacy.'' Furthermore, her contention that ``this corresponding depth of racial obsession occurred only with passing'' for African-Americans spectacularly understates the totality with which whites controlled black life during Jim Crow's dark reign. One senses in Hale's (American History/Univ. Of Virginia) cogent, encyclopedic scholarship the debut of an important new intellectual voiceall the more reason to regret the cloaking of provocative thinking in the fusty duds of academic prose. Segregation Artfully Explained

Lately, I find myself rereading books that challenge my understanding (not to mention my preconceived notions) of race history, but none more than Grace Elizabeth Hale's "Making Whiteness." This gem of a book ultimately defines the construction of race in the early 20th Century South and is written in a style reminiscent of Du Bois and Langston Hughes. It is an intelligent and informative examination of "class exploitation, disempowerment and racial privilege" that dares to reimagine the concept of racial integration. To quote from the book: "We need to remember that difference is created within, not before, our communities; that difference is created within, and not before, our histories; that difference is created within, and not before, ourselves." Over the past few months, I have amassed several books on race, segregation, Reconstruction, lynchings, Jim Crow, etc., and I consider "Making Whiteness" a cornerstone in my library.

Worth every word.

This is not an easy book to read either intellectually or psychologically, but this is not an easy subject to communicate, either. However difficult the academic vocabulary of the author, the fact remains that her concepts and ideas are clearly presented, the chapters well-formed, and sections thoughtfully connected. Dr. Hale's explanation of segregation, how it was developed, maintained and why, is logical, well-documented, and profound. She effectively communicates how completely pervasive, paradoxical, and pathological, segregation was. THe book also communicates how everyone, not just southerners and not just men, contributed to the culture of segregation and why. In short, Dr. Hale finally presents the BIG Picture: the reasons why "equal rights" aren't really equal, why prejudice is still rampant, and why affirmative action isn't enough. For anyone who wants to really understand segregation, the civil rights movement, and race relations in late 20th and early 21st century America, this book is a must read. IT is thought-provoking and profound.

verbose but useful

This is a valuable contribution to a growing subfield that is finally examining the social construction of whiteness. I believe Jacobson's Whiteness of a Different Color to be superior, and honestly, Hale needs to lose some of the academic jargon. But overall, this is a well-researched study. I do take issue, however, with the introduction when Hale claims that whites "were not the victims of racism." Not the chief victims certainly, but victims nonetheless. Hasn't the South's reputation for backwardness and bigotry damaged its economic opportunities, and made "the southern redneck" the new villain of post-1960s pop culture? What all this emphasis on race discrimination does is to de-emphasize the class discrimination that harms whites and blacks both. To say that Billy Bob living in his trailer home has benefitted from the privilege of whiteness is farcical. Not that Hale says this, but isn't it time that more serious scholars examine the way tht race acts as a chimera to divert us from deeper divisions of class and nationality?

Fall in love with the queen of hearts

I loved loved loved The passionate queen I have always had a passion for the queen of hearts so this story was truly fascinating to me to find out how she came to be a woman that would sentence so many to beheadings. I must say this is my favorite of the books so far, and I have read them all.
A girl with a fate not her own locked into her position by cruel hands is able to find friendship and love with a magnificent boy that is not what he seems but something far for amazing.
Hearts that are broken cause people to make terrible decisions that lead down roads better left untraveled.
The queen must learn how to open her heart again to the boy that broke it even if it could mean her undoing.
The boy now a man must learn to cherish and guide his queen bring back the loving innocent girl she was when they first fell in love.
A story you will fall in love with and two people that create magic that you can't help but smile at. These two stole my heart from the moment they met.

I loved this new book by Ms. Jovee's. The book starts out as others have stated of the queen being a young teen and her first meeting of the young dragon. The story line does bounce around a little bit but it's more of a peek here and there to keep the story moving because this story covers years not just a few weeks. And seeing the characters from the first queen book show up unexpectedly was unexpected but by far was not unwelcomed. I loved how the Dragon had to win back the heart of the Queen and to show her that she could rule and love and be loved. And I personally liked the little snippets that alluded to the other queen books. OK side note first Carrots now Goblin Stew.... Woman you got one freaky and wonderful imagination. Lol!

I adore the red queen!! She's humanity at its best and worst! Her life keeps you intriqued from the beginning to end. Going in I really didn't think that I would like her because let's face it she's the Queen of Hearts! Danika even makes a reference to her in the first books about how bad she is, so I wasn't prepared for the amount of sympathy, heart brake, and pride I had for this character. Jovee did it AGAIN, and this is why I love love love everything she has put out! This is most assurantly a must read for everyone who loves the kingdom's series!!!!!

Insightful and easy to understand

The book is full of plenty of great advice, covering a wide variety of areas, and it’s clear to me that the author has really put some time into researching and expressing his points in an insightful way. As well as this, I also found the information to be easy to understand due to the concise, straightforward tone of the writing style – the author, David Meade doesn’t bother bogging the reader down with unnecessary filler and ‘fluff’ and makes the best use of just about every page.
As my business is heavily web-based, I found the advice regarding SEO and page optimization to be especially useful and I will certainly be keeping what I have learned in mind for the future.

A fitting end

The Final book in the When Hell Meets Heaven series

Olivia and Amelia are up against Doco (Department of Covert Operations) once again. To win the final battle against them, Olivia and Amelia feel they have no choice but to ask Parker and Remington to join forces with them. It could be the only way they can save all their lives and those of their loved ones. Reluctantly they set about trying to convince their arch-enemies that this is the right thing to do.

But...........the question to be asked is....... `how will three of DOCO's finest operative Alpha's and a nun work together to rid the world of the evil without killing each other in the process?' The strength of DOCO knows no bounds. Thrown into the mix is a corrupt politician, both parties hell bent on causing mass destruction and mayhem.

Will these four women be able to defeat their enemy? If they fail, their deaths are imminent.

I've followed this series from book one, always eagerly awaiting the next part. Sadly, this is the final part of a well written blockbuster series. A series full of twists and turns, adventure, suspense and surprises throughout. The fact that it's hot, steaming hot, in parts didn't hurt either. I rather thought this book was a cross between Charlie's Angels with a touch of Hogwarts magic for good measure.

It's great to see Olivia, Amelia, Parker and Remington back in action. A most unlikely combination of women I've ever come across, but they fit well together.

This final part is a fitting end to a great series. A real edge of the seat page turner from start to finish. To get the full benefit of this book, you would need to read the previous books in the series. The first two books are free over on Affinity. The rest are very cheap, it's a win-win situation.

Although I've read the first books twice, now that the series is complete, I'm going to indulge myself and read the whole lot back to back. Yes, I've enjoyed the series that much. JM Dragon and Erin O'Reilly have produced an excellent series between them. If you are looking for a great series, full of thrills and spills, with an added touch of humor, look no further.

I've really enjoyed the entire series of "When Heaven Meets Hell", but I think it could have been put ALL in one book instead of so many. This last book was a dissapointment. It didn't have the same "zing" the rest have. If you have read them all, except this last one, wait until it drops to 99 cents to buy it. You have probably waited this long to read it, so a little longer won't hurt. I will be buying more books by JM Dragon in the future. ( I will really miss the Ladies)

I really enjoyed how they brought all the characters from the previous books back into the final chapter. Although in the previous books, I had a hard time liking Parker, by the end I liked all the characters. No-one is perfect, and it is good to see each character's flaws. If you haven't read the previous books in the series, you should. I actually went back and re-read all the previous books, so I could enjoy the final chapter.

About the Author
As a noted commentator on the political, social and psychological history of our time, Christopher Booker has in recent years, through his weekly Sunday Telegraph column, become the most conspicuous 'global warming sceptic' in the British press. He has based his view on exhaustive research into the scientific evidence for and against the theory of 'man-made climate change'.

His professional interest in this issue grew out of research for his previous book Scared To Death, co-written with Dr Richard North, a study of the 'scare phenomenon' which has been such a prominent feature of Western life in recent decades. Booker's other recent books have included The Seven Basic Plots, a best-selling analysis of why we tell stories which has established itself as a standard text (also published by Continuum). He has been an author and journalist for nearly 50 years, and was the founding editor of the satirical magazine Private Eye. Richard North is a political analyst who has been a research director in the European Parliament and was formerly a nationally-known consultant on public health and food safety. He has co-authored several books with Christopher Booker.

Brilliant analysis of scares

Journalist Christopher Booker and former food safety consultant Dr Richard North have written a fascinating book on the rash of scares in the last 20 years. They earlier worked together on a brilliant book on the European Union The great deception.

They study the food scares - salmonella in eggs (1988-9), listeria in cheese, BSE in beef (1996-9) and dioxins in Belgian poultry (1999). Other scares they discuss include the Millennium bug (1999), DDT, the satanic child abuse mania (1987-94), lead, passive smoking, asbestos, SARS, bird flu (2005) (which the World Health Organisation absurdly called `the greatest single health challenge'), organophosphorus, and global warming.

They note that banning DDT has killed two million people every year, because DDT had cut malaria deaths by 95%. The EU backed the ban on DDT.

Organophosphorus, used in sheep dip, was `MAFF-approved', and an HSE leaflet warned of its `cumulative toxicity' leading to `irreversible' damage to the nervous system, akin to ME and Gulf War Syndrome (which also never happened, according to the MoD). The government suppressed the whole story, because it was directly responsible.

A review in the Independent claimed that their chapter on global warming had scarcely any scientific references. It has 117, including important articles in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, the Journal of Geophysical Research, Energy and Environment, the International Journal of Climatology, six from Nature and five from Science. The authors expose as exaggerated the claims of climate doom. They point out that historically rising CO2 levels are associated both with rising and falling temperatures and that the overall ice mass of the Antarctic, which has 89.5% of the world's ice, is increasing, as is Greenland's (10%).

They study the roles of scientists, the media, politicians, officials and non-governmental organisations, especially the `animal rights' groups. All these scares, and others from the witch craze to McCarthyism to the war scares over Iraq and Iran, always give the message - trust the government, pay the huge costs of protection. The real message of the scares for us must be - always look at the evidence not the spin, and seek the truth.

A massive eye opener!

Brilliantly written, faithfully researched. I am old enough to treat everything with suspicion and this book only reinforces why I do.
It is unfortunate that many of the players involved in the 'scares' recounted here will simply not read the book and hang their heads in shame.

A virtual study in what makes the human race look and act stupid. This book should be a standard study for all high school students, business heads, civil servants and media chiefs.

A skeptics guide

The mystery to me is why this book hasn't been widely heralded or attacked. It's been out almost 2 years now and contains what appear to be unassailable arguments and documentation as to why two of the current scares, global warming and secondhand smoke are nonsensical as threats. It hasn't made the best seller lists, yet it also contains a lucid explanation of why reliance on wind energy is both costly and foolish (hint: winds don't always blow and you have to have a backup system when they don't, ergo the cost calculations are nonsense). Where are the global warming acolytes to attack this thing? Where is the savior, Al Gore, to explain it's fallacies? A "must read" for the serious skeptic, but tough slogging. Worth the effort.

Review:

This is a great women’s devotional that combines a scripture reading with a brief explanation/example of the meaning of the scripture. The book is divided into ten different parts, each one dealing with different types of blessings. Some of these include spiritual blessings, material blessings and family blessings. This is very helpful if you need some encouragement in a specific area of your life.

I like the fact that the scripture readings are short, as are the explanations. If you are just looking for a quick pick-me-up, you can read however much you want to at one time. Everyone can afford a few minutes a day to learn more about blessings and God’s love.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an inspirational read. There are enough devotional readings to meet anything in your life that you feel you need help dealing with.
