***CAN BE READ AS STANDALONE***

For Barrett Shaw, there wasn’t much more to life than his career. Still climbing his way to the top, he could do without the distractions and complications of love. But the road to success is a lonely one, and Barrett was starting to think he would never meet a woman who could capture and keep his attention like a courtroom. That was before a chance meeting with a crazy twist brought him face to face with her.

Could she be the one he’s been hoping for?

The jury is still out.

For years, Tabitha Warren managed to keep men away from the mangled mess she once called her heart. Resigned to meaningless sex with random men, she was perfectly content to live a life without love.

Or was she?

The one man she should not want, just might be the only one she will ever need.

You never know when love will come along and change…everything.

Barrett and Tabitha!!
By ObsessedWithBooks
**I was gifted a copy of this book**

This book started off great! Barrett, so focused on his career had never wanted anything more than physical gratification from a woman...until he met Tabitha and realized what he had been missing for so long. Tabitha, having had her heart broken before only engages in meaningless sex and never allows anyone to get too close. Tabitha tries to resist Barrett, she feels the connection between them and she's scared of the feelings he invokes in her. But more importantly, he's Maddie's ex and she doesn't want to break the best friend code.

You will not sleep with him
You will not sleep with him
You will not...
I'm going to f**k his brains out.

When Barrett and Tabitha got together, the chemistry was explosive! Barrett definitely knew how to dominate in the bedroom and this book had lots of steamy scenes. I actually enjoyed these two as a couple and loved watching their relationship progress. As much as she tried to fight it, she fell in love but at the same time, was holding on to a secret. Once that secret was revealed, hearts were broken and trust was destroyed. After that the book pretty much felt rushed to me, especially the way they reunited. The ending just felt a little off to me.

Overall, good story! Loved catching up with characters from the previous books, especially Holden, and the author has convinced me that I need to move to the south and meet me a country boy!! Looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

"I always knew," he whispered.
Closing my eyes, I smiled. "Knew what baby?"
"It would be me and you." I rolled over to face him. "My only regret is not finding you sooner...then you could've been mine longer."

She does it again
By cris
My ONLY complaint....this FABULOUS author cannot write fast enough...she is in one word *Awesome*
Ok before I get to the book...I don't know this author personally ( I wish I did) however this lovely lady writes like I imagine she talks...I love that...I think while we are reading her books we often see her personality shine thru her characters and I really love and admire that. Her characters are what you see is what you get and I really get that because that's how I am in my day to day life so I can really relate...when they are happy I am happy for them and even tho this is a fun romance I really feel all those nitty gritty emotions.
This book deserves more than a measly 5 stars this author really brings it...
Barrett makes a great alpha male and he truely worked hard to get his girl...and Tabitha had a deep sadness within herself and Barretts life dream is to bring her happiness anything to make this beautiful girl smile..but Tabitha is so afraid....afraid to love and too be loved
This book is beautifully written hot sexy moments angst and romance...and did I mention Barrett is one hawttt alpha male...yummy-ok I
Can't wait for the next book...I LOVE how you roll K Langston

Another K Langston hit!!
By Kristin Marvin
Tabitha Warren – Maddie’s roommate and friend – is not interested in men. Well she’s not interested in men anymore. Tabitha had her heart broken before and she will not be giving her heart away again. Ever. She’s content to be what every man wants – a sex toy, nothing more, nothing less. Until Barrett.
“I wanted to be stronger. I wanted to feel good about myself without sleeping with random men. So three months ago I swore off sex for good. At least until I figure out what I want out of life.”
Barrett Shaw – hot stuff lawyer, form boss and sex buddy of Maddie’s – is married to his work. He doesn’t let feelings get involved. He has sex, lots of it, but never kisses his women. Unless you are a case he is going to win, he doesn’t have the time to invest in you. Until Tabitha. Barrett always wins.
“It’s only considered stalking if the attention is unwanted. “
Barrett will not give up until he gets what he wants. Tabitha. Tabitha has secrets that she can’t and won’t share. Reasons, besides heart break, that won’t allow her to give her heart away.
“I see the woman you want to be when you’re with me. Question is…are you brave enough to set her free?”
Every relationship is give and take. Push and shove. Is there such a thing as pushing too hard? Can love really be enough? Can two broken people come together to make one happily ever after?

K Langston has done it again!! I absolutely loved this book!! Tabitha is the perfect combination of sass and emotion. Barrett is alpha but with such a good heart. I loved seeing more of Archer, Katy, Holden, and Maddie too!! If you love the small town southern atmosphere with alpha men and strong women – this series is definitely for you!
5 stars!!

Good guides for an ever increasingly competitive environment
By Mike
This set of guides comes in 8 slim volumes that tackle different content and aspects of the GRE exams:

1) Algebra GRE Strategy Guide, 4th Edition (Instructional Guide)
2) Fractions, Decimals, & Percents GRE Strategy Guide, 4th Edition (Instructional Guide)
3) Geometry GRE Strategy Guide, 4th Edition (Instructional Guide)
4) Number Properties GRE Strategy Guide, 4th Edition
5) The Word Problems GRE Strategy Guide, 4th Edition (Instructional Guide)
6) The Quantitative Comparisons & Data Interpretation GRE Strategy Guide, 4th Edition (Instructional Guide)
7) Reading Comprehension & Essays GRE Strategy Guide, 4th Edition (Instructional Guide)
8) Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence GRE Strategy Guide, 4th Edition

The books can be bought separately on Amazon for between about $13 and $15 at the time of writing this review. So if you feel confident with some of the areas covered you can purchase the volumes needed individually and save yourself some money (I have provided links to individual volumes in the list above to help anyone wanting to do that). If you want more than six of the eight volumes you may as well buy the whole set and save a little cash.

Each new book comes with 1 year access to online back-up materials and access to a test simulator with 6 GRE practice exams.

Each book starts with the same first chapter providing an overview of the examination, which consists of six sections split into two parts; within each part is a verbal and quantitative reasoning section and in the first part you are required to write 2 short essays (what to expect in the essay section is dealt with in book 7 chapter 10). So the guides do not provide a 1-to-1 mapping to a test section. Each book has sample problems and answers and the guides are well written and easy to follow. As always with exams, part of the challenge is the time pressure. Using these guides combined with the online materials will help the diligent student get beyond mastery of the material and into mental flow during the exam.

The format of the GRE changed in August 2011 - so be aware of this when considering buying or using study help materials.

Great for the Returning Student
By Inna Tysoe
I have hit the proverbial glass ceiling in my career. I know what I want to do should I ever decide to grow up but I need an advanced degree to do it. That means going back to school which, in turn, means taking the GRE. Trouble is, it's been decades since I last took a math course. I have vague memories of dreading quadratic equations and for some reason I seem to recall liking geometry but that was all the math I could recall before I picked up these books. I was a bit rusty on the kind of thinking required in the verbal section but as I read and write for a living it wasn't nearly as bad.

These books are great. First of all, the majority of them (6 out of 8) are devoted to math: algebra, fractions, geometry, number properties, word problems and quantitative comparisons. There are also two books devoted to the verbal section: reading comprehension and text completion. The writing is easy to read, comprehensible and (most important for a working adult) it's broken up into digestible pieces. This means that you can come home, tired, with dinner to make, laundry to do, dogs to feed and walk and if you can carve out maybe 30 minutes of your time before your brain goes to mush, you will be OK.

Having said that, be warned that these books aren't going to teach you math or English. Their sole purpose is to remind you about enough of the tricks of the trade to enable you to pass (and hopefully to do well on) a standardized exam. You should have learned this stuff already; now you need to remember this and apply it in a GRE context.

The six online exams are helpful but they are six Full online exams. So don't think you can finish a book and take an exam in that subject only; you can't. A really neat feature of the online exams though is that you can pause them. So let's say you managed to set aside enough time to take the exam but life got in the way. You can pause it and come back to the practice exam. That is not ideal because part of test taking is being able to sit there for however long and take the dang test but it does allow you some flexibility. And trust me, if you're a working adult life will get in the way as often as not.

Also don't think that just because you have the books you will do well on the exam. That's not how it works. You need to study this stuff. It won't learn itself.

So yes, I think these books are great and, if you study, I think they should help.

I recommend them.

There's a lot here, and its quality is very good
By P. Mann
First, I should confess that I taught the GRE for years as a private tutor. In fact, I've made a career of teaching standardized tests. I have never worked for or had any contact with Manhattan Prep, though, and I no longer teach the GRE. For those who are unfamiliar with the GRE, it is a bit like the SAT on steroids. Or was. With the 2005 and upcoming changes in the SAT, the gap grows wider (as the GRE also changes). The GRE is used for admission to some graduate schools. But anyone reading this review probably knows that much, so I'll just get to my assessment of the materials. And there are a lot of them.

You get six--SIX--books on math. All of the books (including the two non-mathematics books) consist of instruction and an abundance of problems. The math books might seem unnecessary to some since the math on the GRE is generally easier than the math on the SAT, but Manhattan Prep has apparently taken the approach it has based on what I experienced as a tutor: a lot of people for whom math is anathema. And the approach here is slow, friendly, and, frankly, pretty darn good. Those who hate math but are serious about improving their GRE scores will probably not find too much here that is frightening and will likely find much that is helpful.

The other two books, "Reading Comprehension & Essays" and "Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence," take a different approach. They don't try to teach reading from the ground up and instead focus on the test. What I mean here is that whereas the math books almost assume complete ignorance of anything beyond multiplication tables, the reading and sentence books assume a fairly high degree of literacy and work more to hone those skills for the exam.

There are a few points on which I disagree with Manhattan Prep, notably with regard to the repeated advice to write longer essays. The seventh book claims that, despite the claims of ETS (the test's creator) to the contrary, longer essays score higher than shorter ones. I actually agree with that statement to a degree. Longer essays almost certainly do score higher, but that's not to say that making an essay longer will, by itself, make it score higher. There is a deeper debate here, the crux of which is whether length causes higher scores or merely correlates with them. If the latter, then longer essays score higher simply because better writers tend to score higher. (An imperfect analogy might be noting that athletes with more endorsements tend to outperform their peers. However, simply getting more endorsements will not make an athlete better since the endorsements are a result of performance, not a cause of it.) At any rate, the debate here is really minor for the test-taker.

Overall, the materials are of excellent quality. I did find a few errors, but far, far fewer than in some very popular books for GRE preparation.

Reporting Vietnam: American Journalism 1959-1975 (Library of America)From Just, Ward (INT)

This one-volume selection, drawn from the original newspaper and magazine reports and contemporary books collected in the acclaimed two-volume hardcover edition, brings together the work of over fifty remarkable writers to create a powerful mosaic view of America's longest war. Reporting Vietnam follows events from the first American fatalities in 1959 through the Tet Offensive in 1968 to the fall of Saigon in 1975, recording the shifting course of the fighting, its impact on an increasingly fractured America, and the changing texture of American journalism.

Here are Homer Bigart David Halberstam, Stanley Karnow, and Neil Sheehan on South Vietnam in the 1960s; Thomas Johnson and Wallace Terry examining the changing attitudes of black soldiers; Sydney Schanberg on the fall of Phnom Penh; Philip Caputo on the last days of South Vietnam. Included as well are Norman Mailer at the March on the Pentagon, Doris Kearns on Lyndon Johnson's anguished decision-making, and James Michener's meticulous reconstruction of the Kent State shootings.

The volume includes a detailed chronology of the war, historical maps, biographical profiles of the journalists, notes, a glossary of military terms, and an index.

The Best and The Brightest
By Philip W. Henry
THE VIETNAM WAR AND THE MEDIA

I am a Vietnam Veteran, a college graduate of the Vietnam Era, and a professional journalist. That should establish either some kind of credibility or culpability. The Vietnam War began when I was l7 years old, and ended when I was 30. That means my generation of draft-aged males... lived with the reality of War throughout their adolescence. I went to college in the '60s and, like most of my classmates, lived under the shadow of Vietnam for my entire college career.. Flunk out...you get Drafted. (that happened to a friend of mine at Yale. He partied too heartily and ended up as a grunt in the Mekong Delta.) As the War escalated, so did the dissent and the polarization of the country.

In l968, the following events occurred:
* The Tet Offensive;
* the Democratic National Convention in Chicago with the arrest of the Chicago Seven;
* The Mexico City Olympics black power protests;
* The assassinations of Martin Luther King and RFK;
* student demonstrations at Berkeley, Columbia, and Paris;
* And the increse in the Force Level in Vietnam approached 500,000.

That makes 1968 the most significant year in my life. That was also the year after I graduated from College, and, lacking plans for graduate school, enlisted in the Army (not out of patriotism but pragmatism: I made a deal with the devil--- I'd volunteer for three years as a Broadcast Specialist, and the Army would keep me out of The Killing Zone. When I got to Saigon, I worked for Armed Forces Radio and TV: reading news they wanted me to read (like Robin Williams' character Adrian Kronauer in "Good Morning Vietnam."

During my year in Saigon, part of my job was to attend the daily press briefings cynically referred to by the press corps as "The Five O'clock Follies." (Because they were timed to occur after the evening TV Newscasts in the States). This was long before CNN; Fox News; the Internet; and Pod-casts. The mainstream media then had a far greater role than today. When Walter Cronkite said the Vietnam War was un-winnable, it ended Lyndon Johnson's career. (Johnson later admitted he knew he was finished after watching the CBS Evening News). Vietnam was called the first Living Room War, because most Americans get their news at the dining room table. And that included escalating casualties, various atrocities like My Lai (which is kind of like the Marines in Iraq); and the rising chorus of dissent among the young.

Another disturbing parallel between Vietnam and Iraq is the arrogance, imperiousness, and hubris of the Secretaries of Defense in both Wars. Both Robert McNamara and Donald Rumsfeld were arrogant and disdainful of the professional soldiers they commanded.
Each time they appeared before Congress and the Media, they said basically : this is the way it is. And don't confuse us with the facts. The Press, in the discordantly alliterative words of former Vice President and Convicted Felon Spiro Agnew (his real name) were "nattering nabobs of negativism" (How about: "Clueless Cheerleaders of Colonialism"?)

Had any of them taken the time to read the history of Indochina and the experience of the French ("Street Without Joy" or "Hell in a Very Small Place" by Bernard Fall; "The making of a Quagmire" by David Halberstam; "Fire in the Lake" by Francis Fitzgerald; or "The Best and the Brightest" by
David Halberstam they would have predicted the inevitable outcome of American Adventurism in Other Places. Those who ignore (or, in George Bush's Case, never learned) the lessons of History are condemned to repeat them"

A valuable compilation
By Author Bill Peschel
Reading this collection of Vietnam-era reportage from The Library of America is a stark reminder of the lasting power of the written word. Has it really been nearly a quarter-century since the black and white images of the helicopters taking off from the roof of the American Embassy faded from our television screens? Grenada, Panama, Iraq -- three wars and God knows how many humanitarian efforts (Somalia, Yugoslavia, did I miss any?)
Yet, the power of memory is such that it doesn't take much to bring it all back. Dipping into these compilations of writings about Vietnam -- the original reportage and memoirs in the Library of America volumes and the best of everything else in "The Vietnam Reader" -- shards of long-forgotten memories were struck just by reading the names of towns and villages. Khe Sahn, Haiphong: The words sound so completely alien, as if they had been coined by H.P. Lovecraft. They trigger memories of tracing the S-curve of the countries on maps in the newspapers, seeing the photographs in Life magazine -- for me, the 1960s will always be remembered as a series of black and white freeze-frames from the magazines, with color reserved only for the more silly stories found in the back of the book -- and hearing them recited on TV in the stentorian tones of Walter Cronkitethe who would recite the weekly casualty figures, printedon screen before the national flags, like baseball scores, while the family ate our meat loaf and mashed potatoes and waited for Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom to come on at 7.
Time has passed and in this media-drenched age, so much history has been created, screened and absorbed over the past quarter-century. Vietnam and Cambodia became a backwater in the American consciousness, flaring up from time to time in response to specific, finite events such as the debate over Agent Orange, the construction of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the screening of "Platoon" and "The Killing Fields," and the debate over draft evasion by Bill Clinton, Dan Quayle, Phil Gramm and Newt Gingrich.
For those of us who were not there, who can view the war almost dispassionately, it is this lack of intervening history that makes these books so powerful and painful to read. This is a chronicle of a nation marching deeper and deeper into a war that the journalists there saw as early as 1965 -- about 150 pages into two volumes that total more than 1,600 pages -- could not be won the way it was being run. Historians will probably argue eternally if it could have been won at all. The repressive and corrupt South Vietnamese government could not win enough "hearts and minds" of the people to defeat the Viet Cong, and an invasion of North Vietnam could have triggered a Korean War-style invasion from China. It took nearly a decade for the United States to find the way out of that bloody tunnel and another two decades before full diplomatic relations were reestablished.
The casualty figures fly beyond the mind's grasp: 58,000 Americans killed, 4,400 South Koreans, 500 Australians and New Zealanders, 180,000 Cambodians (with another million perishing under the Khmer Rouge between 1975 and 1978), a half-million South Vietnamese and an estimated 1.1 million North Vietnamese and Viet Cong.
"Reporting Vietnam" starts with Time Magazine's report on the first U.S. advisers killed in South Vietnam, then continues chronologically with the inevitability of the Zapruder film of John Kennedy's murder ride. It moves with reports from the field -- a report on a Viet Cong massacre in the Ca Mau Peninsula, Neil Sheehan's account on South Vietnamese troops refusing to fight in the battle of Ap Bac, to Joseph Alsop's profile of South Vietnam's president Ngo Diem, from the scenes in Washington of President Johnson and his advisers defending their policies to Tom Wolfe's account of Ken Kesey disrupting an anti-war rally in Berkeley and Norman Mailer's self-important essay about the March on the Pentagon.
Then there are the incidents, as bizarre as any recounted in "Apocalypse Now." The American-run television channel presenting the German opera "Hansel and Gretel" backed by the American Chamber of Commerce; Gloria Emerson reporting the idea by the head of the Civil Operations and Rural Development Support, challenging his fellow CORDS members to participate in the 1971 decathlon comprising "bridge, tennis, gin rummy, volleyball, nautical sports, Chinese chess, winetasting, close harmony, etc." (Emerson, who had spent two years in the field as a correspondent, quoted and commented on Richard Funkhouser's memo: "`It is always open house here at Bienhoa for competitors,' Funkhouser wrote, in that playful spirit so many of us in Vietnam really lacked.")
While movies and TV news reports will fade with time, this will remain as a monument to show the madnessa and unreality of this terrible war.

Amazing Vietnam War Resource from Beginning to End
By ManicPanic
This is exactly the type of book you want to read about Vietnam - in the words of those who were there, whether soldier or reporter. It contains articles written by the media and excerpts from soldiers memoirs in chronological order from the start of the war until the fall of Saigon. (FYI - There is little here from a directly Vietnamese point of view, though there are some who write very sympathetically of their plight.)

This tome (it's over 800 pages of densely packed information and narration, but doled out in 5-10 page excerpts which make great reading) covers everything from the first days of aerial bombing (letters home from one of the first pilots over there) to the African-American experience in Vietnam, to the desolation of those involved when Saigon fell.

Because this is a compilation of actual stories from the Vietnam Conflict you could use it's wealth of information (and sources) to build a case for any position or point of view. It would be an excellent source for research on the Vietnam War, steeped with original quotes and overflowing with the genuine feelings and experiences of those who were there.

Highly Recommended.

Commodities and Capabilities, by Amartya Sen

Commodities and Capabilities presents a set of inter-related theses concerning the foundations of welfare economics, and in particular about the assessment of personal well-being and advantage. The argument presented focuses on the capability to function, i.e. what a person can do or can be, questioning in the process the more standard emphasis on opulence or on utility. In fact, a person's motivation behind choice is treated here as a parametric variable which may or may not coincide with the pursuit of self-interest. Given the large number of practical problems arising from the roles and limitations of different concepts of interest and the judgement of advantage and well-being, this scholarly investigation is both of theoretical interest and practical import.

A classic text on economic utility theory, and a great introduction to Sen
By Stephen Weinberg
Amartya Sen won the Nobel Prize in Economics for his work on the philosophy of economics. My own intellectual life was greatly influenced by the good fortune of attending a lecture Sen gave to my undergraduate department my sophomore year, and I spent the next few years working my way through as much of his writing as I could. Much of it was way over my head, but a few books really helped me understand his concepts. Of these, I personally considered Commodities and Capabilities to be the one that did the most to make Senist philosophy comprehensible to me, and it would be the starting point that I would point a student to if I were trying to introduce someone to Sen (this is not a hypothetical; I just ordered a replacement copy specifically for this purpose).

If you cannot get Commodities and Capabilities, then you could also go with The Standard of Living as a decent introduction, especially if you want to approach his ideas from the standpoint of utility theory. Sen pulls everything together in his masterwork, Ideas of Justice, but I wouldn't want to read that without an introductory book like Commodities and Capabilities.

So I strongly recommend this book as a good point to start reading Sen. But what if you don't know yet whether you want to read Sen?

I have tried many times throughout the years to give a short summary of Senist thought, and it is not easy. I am going to offer four basic points:

1) Sen is heavily influenced by Rawls, and much of his writing can be seen as a reaction to Rawls. (In his comments on a collection of essays on the capabilities approach, Measuring Justice, Sen noted that he felt as though he were being lowered into a pit to fight Rawls, and that if he had to do so, he insisted on wearing a Rawls t-shirt into the fight.)

2) One of Sen's main points of departure from Rawls is in looking for a theory of justice that allows you to compare different states of the world and evaluate incremental change, instead of focusing on a world of ideal justice.

3) Sen deeply respects differences across individuals, especially regarding their preferences and needs. This leads him to react strongly against measuring well-being in terms of the actual goods you have. For example, he often discusses the very different justice implications of somebody starving because he owns no food v. somebody starving because he is choosing to undergo a religious fast. (This is hardly a new idea, of course. In the middle of the lecture I saw, Sen decided he wanted to quote Adam Smith on this point, and asked someone to find the relevant passage by looking up the term "linen shirt" in the index to the Wealth of Nations. Do it.)

4) This leads Sen to perhaps his most famous point, and the point that his book focuses on: that we should evaluate human well-being not in terms of what people have but in terms of their capabilities, of "what they can be and do." Capabilities might include things like "walking down the street without shame."

Sen aggressively avoids suggesting a definitive list of key capabilities, which is probably wise of him; I think that he wants to focus on the bigger picture of what a theory of justice should look like, without getting into endless fights over specifics of implementation. Nonetheless, I think it helps a great deal to understand Sen if you look at Martha Nussbaum's more concrete application of his work, either Women and Human Development (which is quite relevant to men as well!) or Creating Capabilities.

If you're only going to read one book of Sen's, it should be The Idea of Justice. But you could probably read both Commodities and Capabilities and The Idea of Justice more quickly than you could read just The Idea of Justice by itself.

Another Great book by Chris

Another Book Review:
This time I am reviewing Christopher Hart book; Figure It Out! Human Proportions. In comparison to his other book, Figure It Out! Beginners Guide To Drawing People, this book goes a bit more in depth. It shows not only the proportions of the body, but the head, hands and feet as well. It is clear and easy to follow. It's not only a great book for those who wanna draw realism/semi-realism but those who draw Manga/Anime and Cartooning as well. I give this book 5 stars. So when you can, please pick up a copy, you wont be disappointed.

Simple to understand, but explains and illustrates very well.
By Q.W.
I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to understand how to properly draw the human body. It is extra beneficial if one has a basic idea of human anatomy, as this book helps continue that understanding. But even if one does not know much about how the human body fits together, this book explains how it works without being too technical. The tips included are very helpful to anyone looking to improve their drawing style.

This is one of the best books for learning human body proportions. The illustrations are clear and easy to understand. I used this text to assist in sculpting the human form. I can attest that without this text my efforts would have taken considerably more time and effort.

Permanent Present Tense: The Man with No Memory, and What He Taught the World, by Suzanne Corkin

Permanent Present Tense tells the incredible story of Henry Gustav Molaison, known only as H. M. until his death in 2008. In 1953, at the age of twenty-seven, Molaison underwent a dangerous "psychosurgical"procedure intended to alleviate his debilitating epilepsy. The surgery went horribly wrong, and when Molaison awoke he was unable to store new experiences. For the rest of his life, he would be trapped in the moment. But Molaison's tragedy would prove a gift to humanity. The amazing specificity of his impairment shed new light on the functions and structures of the human brain, revolutionizing neuroscience. Today, the case of H. M. stands as one of the most consequential and widely referenced in this fast-expanding field. Renowned neuroscientist Suzanne Corkin worked with Molaison for nearly five decades. In Permanent Present Tense, she tells the full story of his life and legacy, leading her reader to the cutting edge of neuroscience with great clarity, sensitivity, and grace.

Review
London Review of Books
“Corkin's lucid, well-organised telling of Henry's story merges intimate case history with an account of the current scientific understanding and how it was reached.”

The Nation
“A scientifically exciting and personally moving portrait of a man whose life and brain ended up being devoted to the science of memory.”

The Independent
“Her warm, engaging book explains the science in a way accessible to scientists and laypeople alike.”

The Scientist
“A scientific and human monument, touching in its regard for the man (he had a sense of humor, as does she) and breathtaking in its detailed account of the discoveries about the localization and coordination of different aspects of memory made possible by refinements in brain-scanning technology and by Molaison's untiring cooperation.”

Times Higher Education Supplement
“Corkin offers a comprehensive and engaging review of how the field of neuroscience came to learn what we know about memory, all woven into the touching biography of one man…Above all else, the book is a tribute to one man and his contribution to science…We can only hope that future patients are as generous and good-natured, and the researchers studying them as talented as Corkin.”

Wall Street Journal
“A remarkable blend of biography, memoir and scientific history.... ‘Permanent Present Tense' stands as the definitive story of Molaison. Ms. Corkin's narrative is rich with tales of his life, from his happy childhood to his painful decline in later years.... A great book.”

Newsweek
"A surprisingly emotional read. From its historical survey of the 20th-century psychosurgery movement—the most grisly episodes of which involved the now-infamous prefrontal lobotomy—to its somewhat procedural recounting of Molaison's final days, the book repeatedly challenges the reader to decide how one should judge the checkered history of brain research and, in particular, the unique case of Molaison.”

Washington Post
“Corkin expertly uses Henry's case to illuminate major trends in memory research.”

The Guardian
“In her new book, Corkin pays tribute to a much-missed friend, as well as offering lucid accounts of the neuropsychological discoveries he made possible.... This fine and moving book reveals as much about the limitations of neuropsychology as about the scope of human memory”

The Guardian Weekly
"Corkin has written a compelling memoir of that bond between scientist and subject, Permanent Present Tense, a relationship that Henry once described neatly: "It's a funny thing — you just live and learn. I'm living and you're learning.”

Nature
“Corkin, who worked with HM for half a century, has now written Permanent Present Tense. She has woven her memories of her experimental and personal dealings with HM into a panoramic history of the past 60 years of the neuropsychology of memory. The result is superb. Because she was such an integral part of this history, Permanent Present Tense is also her intellectual autobiography.”

PsycCRITIQUES
“All readers, however, will be struck by the impact of case H. M. on medicine, psychology, and neuroscience, and they will be fascinated by Henry, the man behind the initials.”

Library Journal
“Corkin's supportive and sympathetic relationship with Molaison humanizes her clearly expressed…accounts of research on brain functions and anatomy.”

Kirkus Reviews
"Both a compassionate biography and a lucid account of the advances in neuroscience made possible through one man's personal tragedy."

Daniel L. Schacter, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of The Seven Sins of Memory: How the Mind Forgets and Remembers
“The amnesic patient H.M. is arguably the most important case in the history of neuropsychology. Nobody knew him better than Suzanne Corkin, who has written an engaging and insightful account of H.M.'s memory loss that combines personal stories with accessible discussions of memory research. Just as important, Permanent Present Tense presents a sympathetic portrait of the person named Henry Molaison.”

Science
“A touching yet unsentimental glimpse of [Corkin's] 46-year connection to this ‘pleasant, engaging, docile man' and his tragedy, interests, and experience of everyday life. At the same time, Corkin skillfully uses stories about his experiences and capabilities to illustrate some of the scientific principles underlying memory. She also offers a comprehensible historical sketch of the study of memory and the burgeoning field of neuroscience—from the dubious and gruesome practice of prefrontal lobotomy to the development of powerful brainimaging techniques.... Sadly, Molaison's condition prevented him from ever fully grasping the importance of his contributions to science and humanity. Corkin's compelling account in Permanent Present Tense should help ensure that he will remain an unforgettable figure in the continuing saga of our quest to understand the workings of the mind.”

Maclean's
"[A] gripping book.... No one was better suited to be [H.M.'s] memoirist than Corkin."

Science News
“Part memoir, part scientific history, Corkin's book weaves together tales of working with Molaison and a vivid backstory on the scientific approach, taking readers through 60-plus years of memory research.”

Steven Pinker, Harvard College Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of How the Mind Works and The Stuff of Thought
“A fascinating account of perhaps the most important case study in the history of neuroscience, rich with implications for our understanding of the brain, our experience, and what it means to be human.”

Howard Gardner, author of Multiple Intelligences
“Drawing on her unique investigations over more than four decades, neuroscientist Suzanne Corkin relates the fascinating story of how one severely amnesic man transformed our understanding of mind, brain, and memory.”

Philip A. Sharp, Institute Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
“Suzanne Corkin has written an enjoyable and sensitive story of H.M.'s life and what it has taught us about memory. Millions of patients have been the source of advances in science but few are celebrated as individuals. We learn through H.M. that ‘Our brains are like hotels with eclectic arrays of guests—homes to different kinds of memory, each of which occupies its own suite of rooms.'”

Good read for subject, but highly technical
By R. Bennett
I have read about amnesia patient H.B. (Henry Molaison) for a long time and was very interested when the psychologist who was able to work with him for over 4 decades would be writing a biography of him. I have cognitive memory issues of my own and though if I could read about how he compensated for his missing memory to live to over 80 years-old, it could be beneficial to my own understanding of memory. While the author Corkin did include many human elements in describing the long and well-researched life of H.B. after his brain surgery left him with permanent amnesia, she is a professor and writes at a level that her college and graduate students would read at including many medical and neuropsychological terms that were a little hard to understand even though I am a college graduate and have had some experience in grad school. I think this book is written more for the memory researcher or psychoanalyst who wants more information about the most famous and well-studied brain in the world up to the present time and so much for the general layperson with a casual interest who might find the story of H.B.'s life interesting and compelling for the human elements. I would recommend this book for anyone looking to increase their understanding of memory and what regions of the brain do what for different cognitive processes in a semi-professional way, but it will be a fairly hard read for anyone who is not really into the subject and committed to working through the professional lingo peppered throughout the book.

Truly memorable - a must read for all students of memory research
By The Explorer
This is a truly remarkable book about the most famous patient in neuroscience - Patient H.M. - written by his bona-fide scientific guardian Dr. Suzanne Corkin . All students of Neuroscience know about H.M. and his anterograde amnesia due to the surgical removal of his hippocampi, but there are much more fascinating details to be learned!

For example, did you know that H.M.'s amygdala were also completely removed? That he could still express a full range of emotions without the amygdala, but he had deficits in judging internal states such as hunger, thirst, and pain? Did you know that H.M. also suffered retrograde amnesia that extended backwards to almost 15 years before the surgery? H.M. was sometimes able to learn and remember certain information after his surgery, which surprised Dr. Corkin and prompted her to conduct further experiments to find out the causes. Dr. Corkin's research investigated not only the declarative memory deficits of H.M., but probed the emotion, sleep, motor skills, priming effects, and various other intricacies of learning and memory. In the book, Dr. Corkin goes into comprehensive details of her experiments, complete with the rationale and the scientific background for her experimental designs. One can learn a tremendous amount about memory research and neuroscience in general just by reading this book.

Overall, this is a fascinating read. The narrative is well-written and engaging; I read the whole book cover-to-cover at once. My only minor criticisms are that 1) there could be better graphs and diagrams, and I'd appreciate more high-quality photos of the main star, Henry Molaison; and 2) names of collaborating researchers and scientists are selectively mentioned or omitted, it would be better to either mention all the names (instead of eg. a researcher at UCSD) or at least cite the names in the footnotes to give proper credit/recognition. Otherwise, this is a fascinating account of the memorable life of H.M. and of the remarkable achievements of Dr. Corkin and her colleagues!

"The man behind the initials, and a life behind the data"
By Umer Vakil
It isn't often that you can tell the history of a field through the history of one man. But H.M could claim that honor for memory neuroscience. After going through a bilateral medial temporal-lobe resection to cure his petit mal seizures from childhood epilepsy - H.M was unable to form any new long-term memories. He specifically lacked declarative memory, memories where people can openly state what they have learned. He lost his temporal lobe, the right temporal lobe processes visual-spatial info and the right verbal info - with neural bridges providing each other with information. Anyone who has taken a course in memory will now recognize an entire world behind a simple textbook case-study mentioned in a chapter. We're privileged to have this book - but what about F.C, P.B, K.F, N.B and P.Z ? Who knows if someone will do them justice by documenting the real lives behind the case study.

We know so many things about memory and about being human, how it determines our self and identity, how relationships depend on common memories - but all this abstract pondering comes to life when you look at a real-life case and how someone copes in the light of losing his humanity. It also sheds light into the recklessness of medicine during the height of psychosurgery, and how the discrete/modular view of the neural underpinnings of certain abnormalities resulted in scientists feeling that certain brain areas could be removed to cure so and so problem. The worst-case scenario can be seen when Walter Freeman operated twenty-five women a day. What is slightly disturbing is that the baton has now been passed to pharmacology, and misdiagnoses and overmedicating are simply modern-day examples of similar medical irresponsibility.

H.M was really useful because he didn't suffer from any psychiatric disorder and his amnesia didn't affect cognitive performance on non-memory task - so experimental data could be isolated as the causal result of amnesia. The beauty of the Henry Molaisson was that his case revolved around so many important topics, such as the acquisition of episodic (events in certain time and place) and semantic (meanings) knowledge. For example, it was via such cases that we saw that the hippocampus is responsible for word associations.

This book is very academic, and is primarily for those that have done their studies in the cognitive scientists. A regular reader wouldn't know what to make of the information or the larger picture behind the mentioned science. If you were expecting a biography, the chapter "Henry's Universe" is probably all you'll get. Its hard to write about the "most comprehensively studied patient in neuroscience" without introducing one to the history of the field and how it developed as H.M. aged.

Rereadable and endlessly engrossing, can be read as a history of memory neuroscience. It tells you about the ecstasy when you find an opportunity for scientific discovery, perfectly captured by the hurried attempt to image the Henry's brain after he died to get a clear picture of his brain. The history of science owes this book a lot!
