Robert E. Coleman is Distinguished Professor of Evangelism and Discipleship at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He also served as dean of the Billy Graham International Schools of Evangelism as well as director of the Billy Graham Center Institute of Evangelism at Wheaton College.

Here's a classic exposition of Christ's discipleship methods. Quick read, but it'll stay with you for a long time.

Use the chapter subtitles

Get a copy of this book and write down all the chapter subtitles. If you live out the intentions they address you will master biblical discipleship and leadership. As it happens, Coleman outlines the differences between motivating teams, coaching, mentoring, and discipling - though he never seems to mention it.
This book follows The Master Plan of Evangelism in attempting something profoundly readable and practical. That it is not quite as successful is unfortunate, because the "doing" and "being" of leadership longs for something just so profound.

What is God's Aspiration for Our Lives - page 41

Long before some svelte preachers (whom I love and speak in their way to this culture) came in skinny jeans and v-neck t-shirts, Dr. Coleman wrote this: "Discipling men and women is the priority around which our lives should be oriented." That''s how he starts the book - and it just rolls like a steamroller. I can't help but feel conviction and a sense of having wasted time, money, energy and the resources of others in just trying to build the church more. I appreciate Mike Breen, who said: "If you make disciples, you always get the church. But if you make a church, you rarely get disciples."
Coleman's style is not contemporary (ha, which of course will be different in 10 more years!), so the disciple of Jesus will need to be patient. It's not Coleman's fault. It's not your fault. Just walk through patiently. Brothers and sisters: Here is a man of God who has walked with the Savior and deserves a little time. (think about it: any man tapped by Billy Graham to lead your discipleship efforts has got to have something to say!)
In the end, if we can collaborate with the local church in making disciples, who make disciples, who then make disciples ... we've done okay.
