May be a little too graffic for a tween

This book was a gift for my tween daughter. Most of the text is excellent in that tibia direct, informative, normalizing things like body scent, giving detailed directions on how to thoroughly clean every part of the body, and showing pictures of what regular bodies look like. For this I like the book and think it's helpful for my daughter. What I dislike is the fully naked pictures of women, including one with several tattoos, and the very graffic text about sex and sexual transmitted diseases/infections. If you have conservative values but also find no shame in knowledge about the body, it's functions, and teaching youth about sex (as I do) you may appreciate most of this book. However, I did not appreciate the graffic text about teen sex, which you are free to condone for your family but in our family this is not condoned. Nor did I appreciate the detailed directions about how to use various forms of birth control (though tou may like this for your child). I did appreciate my daughter seeing what regular girls bodies looked like I. Their under garments, just not the naked pictures. Although I did appreciate the up close photograph of a few different vulvas (labias and all) so my daughter could see how normal she is. In the ways that this book is providing knowledge I like it. In the ways that is crosses into condoning teen intimacy I do not. I removed a few pages and talked with my daughter about how we will read them together in the next few wars as she grows older and it becomes more appropriate for her to learn about these things. I hope my review helps families decide how this book may be used for tween-teen girls from families with various values. Thigh we are conservative, this book still has a place in my daughter's life and my dislikes were minor enough to still use it (removing and setting aside the concerning pages for later). Eventually all these things will be learned and I'd rather she learn them at home with me than somewhere else. Best wishes to all the folks raising budding young women!

Perfect for my pre-teens

Extremely well written book with lots of appropriate photos. Nancy Redd goes into very tasteful detail re: menstruation, piercings, vaginitis, contraception, normal variations in body types (including genital), sex etc. I'm in OB/Gyn and find this a perfect book to just have casually placed on bookshelf. I have 2 daughters, 12 and 14, who don't want to hear about any of this from me, but I know they're reading it (because they don't put it back on the shelf) and getting good information.

Every woman and especially young woman should have a copy of this book

This is such a fabulous book, I want to buy a copy for every 13-18 year old girl in this country. It has pictures of women of all colors and sizes, which is so rare in this restrictive media world we live in. And it provides honest, frank, and even sometimes personalized discussions about things that it is so hard for young women (and women in general!) to ask each other about or to find good information on. It has sections on "shape," "skin," "down there," "boobs," and "hair and nails," with each showing a variety of pictures and talking about various possible problems, worries, or conditions that affect women and their bodies. It's like the "Our Bodies, Our Selves" for a new generation! Thanks so much to Nancy Redd for this, I am immediately sending copies to my teenage girl cousins, and also to a few adult women I know...!

About the Author

Dr. Anne Rose is the Coordinator of the Anticoagulation Stewardship Program at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Health System (UW Health) located in Madison, Wisconsin. Dr. Rose received her PharmD degree from Butler University. During her post graduate training she completed a PGY-1 pharmacy residency at the Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, Illinois. In her current position, Dr. Rose coordinates all anticoagulation related safety, quality, decision support and performance improvement initiatives across UW Health. In addition to coordinating the anticoagulation program, she also practices clinically in the areas of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and in anticoagulation management at the UW Health Anticoagulation Clinic. In 2011, her Anticoagulation Stewardship Program received the Award for Excellence in Medication-Use Safety from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Research and Education Foundation for pharmacist led initiatives in improving patient care.

Understanding Christianity is a great book for younger and older Christians alike. It poses those most basic of questions and answers them in a straightforward manner using biblical verses to support the answers. I like that is explains the Christian concepts such as “justification”, while breaking down such Christian jargon into its essence. A good read for any Christian at any stage of their walk.
