4 1/2 STARS --- AN ASTONISHINGLY BEAUTIFUL PUBLICATION WITH INSPIRATIONAL CREATIONS --- UNDERSTAND THIS IS A BOOK OF PASTRY RECEPIES AND ART, NOT A BOOK OF CHOCOLATES, OR INSIDER TECHNIQUE & SECRETS

This is the third book from Bachour and the focus should be understood before purchase in order to appreciate it, or realize it's not for you. Fist, it is not a book about making chocolates. For those not familiar with Antonio Bachour, he is one of the most renowned American pastry chefs. So certainly the focus of this book will be about making pastries. Also, there is intentionally not a lot of explanation of professional insider technique. This book is written with the expectation that readers have at least a very rudimentary understanding of making pastries. The forward explains it more, warning that measurements are given in grams and professional terms are used. However, with some basic knowledge and an ability to follow written instructions well, it is possible for a home gamer to make many of these recipes. Also, these are very artistic deserts and not necessarily the kind of thing people are throwing on the table for dessert at Sunday dinner. The instructions are given in simple bullet points - again, without any additional insight or techniques. It's up to the user to make it happen. Could it have been more insightful to those who want to learn professional techniques? Certainly. But there is no claim about that here and this is not designed for the absolute beginner in the kitchen. That said, new cooks still might find tremendous inspiration and insight in this book.

FINAL THOUGHTS: I have provided a few examples of the pictures below, though it's hard without good equipment handy to do justice to the beauty of this book (glossy pages are hard to photograph). Though I provided more photos of the artistry, there are plenty of recipes and I have an example of the very simplistic explanations provided in the book. This is typical of the entire book and you can see plainly the focus on steps rather than special techniques. Make no mistake, this is also very much a culinary "ART" book. I think sometimes there is a feeling in the culinary book market that too many photos is a sign of a book not serious about the actual food. In this case I think the opposite is true. For me the extraordinary photos are a source of inspiration and I appreciated them greatly. Do I wish there were other aspects to this volume? Certainly. But I will not fault the book for defining its purpose and fulfilling that point. There is no false advertising, you just have to understand it. The contents in the form of recipes are actually written for students of patisserie, or enthusiasts as the editor claims. For those who have not yet entered that path, perhaps this will act as inspiration as you begin that journey.

Great book. Clearly targeted at professionals or advanced home bakers. My only qualm is that while the pictures are absolutely beautiful, they spine of the book is in the middle of every single picture. You can't get a great idea of what it's actually supposed to look like.

This book is fantasic! I was so excited when I got it in the mail. The recipes and instruction are beautifully written, I finally got to make one of his dulcey cake, it was outstanding, just make sure you buy a lot of Valrhona chocolate though !

About the Author
Robert W. Smith is one of America's great pioneers in the Asian martial arts and has written numerous books and articles on theses ancient fighting traditions. Smith is the author of "Pa-Kua: Chinese Boxing for Fitness and Self-Defense" and" Chinese Boxing: Masters and Methods," also available from North Atlantic Books. He lives in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

THOMAS D. LYNCH is Professor of Public Administration at Florida Atlantic University.

This fifth edition makes improvements to previous editions by drawing upon the strength of a collaborative effort. Specifically, this edition adds a co-author—Robert Smith, who comes to this task with considerable state government budget experience. We believe this edition continues and enhances the blend of practical application, theory, and empirical rigor necessary for understanding public budgeting in the United States. Our collaboration in this edition focuses on balancing the strength of a winning approach with timely additions and updated tables, charts, and graphs. This revised material complements the successful approach of the earlier editions, which explained budgetary practice and process as they developed in the twentieth century. It was our task in this fifth edition to develop an explanation of public budgeting in a twenty-first century context.

Indeed, public budgeting is an evolving endeavor, and the past twenty years have witnessed legislation and practices that have tried to cope with budget crises at the federal, state, and local levels. Unfortunately, many of these efforts have not adequately addressed the complex structural, governance, and process issues fundamental to public budgeting. Our approach was to address recent budget developments and related phenomena with a focus on the problem itself. We are optimistic that the level of academic inquiry and professional expertise in the field of public budgeting is up to the task. However, the real challenge is to bring these energies to bear on the fundamentals of the budgetary process for meaningful long-term reform.

To this end, this text blends the experiences of a former state budget practitioner and the insights of an accomplished budget scholar. Of particular note is the chapter on the use of analysis in the budget process. The result is a text that is reorganized, relevant, and timely for students and teachers of public budgeting. At the same time, it is difficult to separate budgeting from issues of financial management, and so we address both subjects in a manner that stresses the interrelationships between the two. Finally, because there are few texts that focus on the details of budget practice and process, we believe that this book is an essential read for students and practitioners interested in a full understanding of budgeting in America.

May be a little too graffic for a tween

This book was a gift for my tween daughter. Most of the text is excellent in that tibia direct, informative, normalizing things like body scent, giving detailed directions on how to thoroughly clean every part of the body, and showing pictures of what regular bodies look like. For this I like the book and think it's helpful for my daughter. What I dislike is the fully naked pictures of women, including one with several tattoos, and the very graffic text about sex and sexual transmitted diseases/infections. If you have conservative values but also find no shame in knowledge about the body, it's functions, and teaching youth about sex (as I do) you may appreciate most of this book. However, I did not appreciate the graffic text about teen sex, which you are free to condone for your family but in our family this is not condoned. Nor did I appreciate the detailed directions about how to use various forms of birth control (though tou may like this for your child). I did appreciate my daughter seeing what regular girls bodies looked like I. Their under garments, just not the naked pictures. Although I did appreciate the up close photograph of a few different vulvas (labias and all) so my daughter could see how normal she is. In the ways that this book is providing knowledge I like it. In the ways that is crosses into condoning teen intimacy I do not. I removed a few pages and talked with my daughter about how we will read them together in the next few wars as she grows older and it becomes more appropriate for her to learn about these things. I hope my review helps families decide how this book may be used for tween-teen girls from families with various values. Thigh we are conservative, this book still has a place in my daughter's life and my dislikes were minor enough to still use it (removing and setting aside the concerning pages for later). Eventually all these things will be learned and I'd rather she learn them at home with me than somewhere else. Best wishes to all the folks raising budding young women!

Perfect for my pre-teens

Extremely well written book with lots of appropriate photos. Nancy Redd goes into very tasteful detail re: menstruation, piercings, vaginitis, contraception, normal variations in body types (including genital), sex etc. I'm in OB/Gyn and find this a perfect book to just have casually placed on bookshelf. I have 2 daughters, 12 and 14, who don't want to hear about any of this from me, but I know they're reading it (because they don't put it back on the shelf) and getting good information.

Every woman and especially young woman should have a copy of this book

This is such a fabulous book, I want to buy a copy for every 13-18 year old girl in this country. It has pictures of women of all colors and sizes, which is so rare in this restrictive media world we live in. And it provides honest, frank, and even sometimes personalized discussions about things that it is so hard for young women (and women in general!) to ask each other about or to find good information on. It has sections on "shape," "skin," "down there," "boobs," and "hair and nails," with each showing a variety of pictures and talking about various possible problems, worries, or conditions that affect women and their bodies. It's like the "Our Bodies, Our Selves" for a new generation! Thanks so much to Nancy Redd for this, I am immediately sending copies to my teenage girl cousins, and also to a few adult women I know...!

About the Author

Dr. Anne Rose is the Coordinator of the Anticoagulation Stewardship Program at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Health System (UW Health) located in Madison, Wisconsin. Dr. Rose received her PharmD degree from Butler University. During her post graduate training she completed a PGY-1 pharmacy residency at the Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, Illinois. In her current position, Dr. Rose coordinates all anticoagulation related safety, quality, decision support and performance improvement initiatives across UW Health. In addition to coordinating the anticoagulation program, she also practices clinically in the areas of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and in anticoagulation management at the UW Health Anticoagulation Clinic. In 2011, her Anticoagulation Stewardship Program received the Award for Excellence in Medication-Use Safety from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Research and Education Foundation for pharmacist led initiatives in improving patient care.
