Salman Akhtar, M.D., is Professor of Psychiatry at Jefferson Medical College, Lecturer on Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and Training and Supervising Analyst at the Philadelphia Psychoanalytic Institute. He is the Book Review Editor of the Journal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies, an associate edi-tor of the Journal of Psychotherapy Practice and Research, member of the editorial board of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, past member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis, and an editorial reader for Psychoanalytic Quarterly. He is the author of Broken Structures: Severe Personality Disorders and Their Treatment (1992) and Quest for Answers: A Primer for Understanding and Treating Severe Personality Disorders (1995). His more than 130 scientific publications also include thirteen edited or co-edited books. A special book indeed!

I see this book as narratives of a person who is not only a poet, academician & therapist but also has experienced the psychological stages one goes through during immigration & acculturation. Being an eminent psychoanalyst & prolific writer, Dr. Akhtar's books are always wonderful reads. Being an immigrant psychistrist & psychotherapist, I think I live through the pages of this book & thank him profusely for writing this masterpiece.

Excellent book for clinicians

Wonderful food for thought abounds in this book, with clinical examples to support theories and themes. This book is helpful in framing treatment issues that arise when working with individuals in psychotherapy (with any kind of psychological distress) who are immigrants in America and elsewhere.

This book had so many pages of useless information. 50 pages of charts showing trend followers ...

This book had so many pages of useless information. 50 pages of charts showing trend followers vs the s&p500 during market crashes etc.. the point could have been made in 1-2 pages. We get it.. trend followers did better than buy and hold investors. There's also 100 pages of filler about famous trend followers and the returns of their funds. This is also something that could have been covered in 1-2 pages. We get it.. trend followers make great returns. I don't need 10000 examples of this to drive the point home. I got to page 180 and wanted to set fire to this book. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay full price for it or I'd be requesting for a refund. I guess I can use it as a paper weight now or take it camping to start a fire.

Did not include the "How to" do this.

On one hand I agree with the other reviews that say the "How to" is missing from this book, on the other hand, I did gain perspective.
A lot of this book is about the psychology, maybe too much but I can identify with the emotional aspects of trading. And there are so many quotes from successful traders, it starts getting redundant (some quotes are in there more than once) and for that matter the entire book is a bit redundant, but keep reading because there is some good information in here. Your not going to learn everything from the ground up with this book, it is probably better suited for an experienced trader or a supplement to other reading. I may have missed it but I don't think he ever, specifically explained what a trend is or how to identify one in the context of trading. I also used investopedia quite a bit while reading because investment terms are not always explained. Still I'm glad I read it (Well most of it anyway) and am now looking for something that includes the "How to".
Update: just started "Trend trading for a living", claims to include the how to and usable system to get you started.

A Better Way to Grow Your Wealth

In Trend Following, Mr. Covel not only explains what this trading strategy is, the philosophy and psychology behind it, but also provides a huge amount of data that proves that it works. If you're looking for a better alternative to buy-and-hold investing or value investing (really the same thing) this will give you a good start towards a system that will make money over the long term, in good times or bad.

If you like your books spicy, this will not disappoint. It's peppered throughout with on-point quotes from very successful traders as well as other quotable people. As a side note, this works well in the paperback edition. Unfortunately, in the Kindle edition (I'm using the App for Macs) the quotes are inserted in-line with the text, which interrupts the flow and makes it a little difficult to read. I would recommend the paperback if you have a choice.

However you read it, you won't be disappointed unless you're expecting a step-by-step guide to overnight riches. It's not that. But if you're looking for a better way to grow your retirement funds or even a way to get rich (with patience and effort), this book is a great starting point.

The perpetrators of heinous crime, by assassinating Rajiv, directly interfered in our sovereign rights and caused disruptive activities in our democratic system. More like a journal than a history.

This isn't a history of vaccines. it isn't even a scientific discussion of the pros and cons of vaccinating your kids. What is it, then? It's one persons reflections on their journey through the process of getting a kid their shots. Biss is more sympathetic to people who decide to skip immunizing their kids than some would like, but she does cover the negative side of that decision. It's well written and an easy read.

I can't give it 5 stars, because Biss could have given us a broader perspective on the history and science of vaccines than she did. Instead, she spends time reflecting on the burdens of 21st century parenting. So she should, but the percentage devoted to this is too high.

Perhaps my expectations were the problem. It seems everyone had this as a top ten book of the year. It was a good book, I'm glad I read it, I don't feel cheated and I would recommend it to you. But - it's not great. Very good. Not top ten great.

Far Horizons: Across the Great Divide

So there I was hiking through the Galapagos Island's on my Honeymoon and all I could think about was where can I find a place to sit down and continue reading 'Far Horizons'.
I'm actually serious..
Like many of those born in the Y Generation, I have a rather short attention span and reading a book that's over 500 pages seems like the impossible but I must admit, I was sad when I turned to the last page, I wanted more.

I've read every motorcycle travel book i could get my hands on and I must say, this is the best one i've read yet!!
The writing style has an amazing flow to it and it has great storytelling. Its a great read and I want more!

I loved the book. Having traveled many of the miles that Andy did, it was interesting to hear the thoughts of someone who has never seen them before. I enjoyed Andy's style, it was like sitting over coffee or a beer and having a great chat with him.

Great Book for young female ballers

I've known Tiny for a long time, although we've never been super close, she's played in my tournaments when she was young and I've coached some of her good friends, including people she talks about extensively in the book. This was an interesting book for me to read since Wbb is such a small community. Whether you know Tiny or not, it's definitely a valuable book for any young female baller. The message of preserving thru adversity is a common theme and it will be easy to relate to for any young athlete (really of any sport and for either gender).

My husband and I are trying to conceive and this book is really helping us with all levels of our journey. The author explains all the ins and outs regarding the medical side of infertility.

We have gone through IVF and I wish I had this on hand for that first cycle. I would have know more of what to expect. A great guide if you are considering IVF or medical conception of any kind.

Great book!!

This book is perfect! It explains everything you need to know (and more) about assisted conception. There was a fair amount of focus on the UK specific healthcare system, but I chose to view this as "bonus material". The information was extensive without being overly technical. I highly recommend this book to anyone considering IVF or other fertility assistance. Great Book!

A comprehensive yet readable guide to making a difference

This book demonstrates the remarkable power of combining focused efforts with passion for a cause. The authors take goals that can seem overwhelming and divide them into manageable step-by-step tasks. The book is engaging, written with plenty of personality, and peppered with advice drawn from an impressive collection of experts.

The methodology of the book (do what works - work together - make it last) is discussed in depth, with options thoroughly explored. Having served on several nonprofit boards over the years, I found the chapter discussing how to revitalize a team suffering from a lack of energy especially insightful for any organization.

As the authors note, every day is an opportunity. This is a book that can inspire every reader to understand just how much can be accomplished with passion and focus. It's exciting to contemplate what good works this book may inspire.

I love this guide! Nina Vasan and Jennifer Przybylo have done an amazing job of making informative material a lot of fun to read. You can tell these girls have done their homework because they have a lot of references to published literature and interesting studies in business, leadership, management, psychology, and sociology. To that they've added stories of social enterprises, nonprofits, and student organizations of all sizes from the famous to home-grown. These make the book good, however a number of other books offer similar information. What really makes Do Good Well stand out is:

(1) IT'S EMPOWERING. When other books talk about "taking action" they either only discuss simple tasks like "call your Senator's office" or "donate $20", or tell the story of people who did great work but don't explain how you as the reader can do meaningful work. Do Good Well is the ultimate how-to handbook, a practitioner's DIY (or DIT, "do-it-together" as the authors would say).

(2) IT'S "REAL". It's obvious the authors are leaders and social innovators themselves because Do Good Well has lessons galore from their personal experiences, giving it a flavor of authenticity. Also I like that they don't paint themselves as perfect leaders, but are honest and comfortable explaining where they made mistakes and how to prevent you from doing the same.

(3) IT'S FUN. Do Good Well is jam packed with page-long exercises and opportunities to discuss the material with larger groups like a friend, the team you're working on, your class, etc. Also the authors break down big topics into digestible bites, so the material is much more engaging. Bonus: cute drawings. Not all of them help to better understand the content, but they make the experience of using the book much more fun.

(4) IT'S FUNNY. This is the best part: they're unexpectedly funny at times. I don't think I've ever seen subjects like leadership and social innovation, which are serious topics, presented with wit and humor. It isn't everywhere in the book, but when you see it you'll enjoy a few chuckles.

Hitchhiker's guide to life, the universe and social innovation

This is a great guidebook on how to start, lead and grow non-profit or volunteer organizations or student groups, and I wanted to call attention to it because it's coming from a unique and fresh perspective.

Like any book, the strengths of Do Good Well derive from the experiences of its authors. In this case, Nina Vasan and Jennifer Przybylo both have amazing resumes in founding, participating in and strengthening non-profit and social change organizations, on scales ranging from neighborhood groups to international NGOs (check out their bios in the "more about the authors" section for details). In that sense, they're the perfect guides to this subject: they've been where you (or your students) are and know what works. At the same time, I was (pleasantly!) surprised by how approachable and engaging the writing was: the authors take an informal, conversational tone and come off as the opposite of "preachy" (for lack of a better word) -- they're not afraid to use mistakes they've made to illustrate a point.

Another big plus is the level of attention to detail: this book covers absolutely EVERYTHING at all stages of your group's development, from choosing a name to incorporating as a non-profit organization. I think this is one of the main factors differentiating Do Good Well from other books on this topic: the focus isn't why you should be working to make things better (I mean, if you're picking up a book on this subject, presumably you don't need to be convinced about that), or biographical stories of people who've been successful doing that, but a thorough and practical how-to guide for achieving real social change. If you've ever wanted to make a difference in your community but thought that it would be too much work, or didn't know where to begin, then this is DEFINITELY the book for you.

At the same time, though, it doesn't read like a dry reference manual: its 560 pages (I said it was thorough!) are divided up into many short, manageable sections. It's also written in an informal, humorous style, and as a reader I found this conversational tone to be very engaging. The main text is supplemented by many case studies and commentaries which were contributed by other authorities, as well as self-test questionnaires to help focus your thinking, in addition to some cute cartoons. According to the book's preface, it's been in development for a decade, and the polish and thoughtfulness show -- but it's also fully up-to-date, and a major focus is how to make the best use of internet resources for organization and publicity.

To summarize, I think Do Good Well occupies an absolutely unique place in the literature and is superbly executed. It'll be the first thing I recommend to anyone with an interest in starting out in volunteer work, non-profits or social entrepreneurship.
